anthonytt Posted June 29, 2016 Posted June 29, 2016 Do any American citizens use turbo tax? If so, is there a special version for expats? Or just the regular one? From what I read you can't e-file, just print and mail? It would just be for US because the only income I get in the Philippines is interest in my bank account which is only $44.00 a year. Under the $1,500 foreign income threshold according to IRS website. This would be for 2016 since I did 2015 already with my accountant in US which I will not be using anymore. Thanks for any help on this.
Tukaram (Tim) Posted June 29, 2016 Posted June 29, 2016 After moving over here, I generally don't have to file but did this year. I went to the IRS website, clicked on 'free file' and think I chose Turbo Tax. There are a bunch of services you can use. I e-filed, and used my foreign address, no problem. Unfortunately I had to pay a little - first time I had to pay in over 25 years. I had to file a couple years ago and did the e-file with direct deposit for my refund. (Foreign address but US bank)
Happyhorn52 Posted June 29, 2016 Posted June 29, 2016 I use TaxAct and file online. You need a 5 digit code from the IRS to file but it works fine for me. https://www.taxact.com/
roddavis Posted June 29, 2016 Posted June 29, 2016 Been using TurboTax for the last 20 years, the last 2 years, retired in Cebu. Paid both times with US Bank acct. Haven't heard of any problems! Rod

roddavis Posted June 29, 2016 Posted June 29, 2016 The five digit code is your digital signature, and mine was created when I used Turbotax. Although mine was only 4 digits. Once generated, it is used every year from then on. So I am pretty sure using Taxact or Turbotax for the first time it will ask you for it, if you don't have it, it will ask you to generate one like a PIN number. If you use the program again in the future, it scans your system for the previous years taxfile and transfers all personal info and PIN so you do not have to remember it. Hope this helps. Double check on the interest. Interest may be separate from the $1500 threshold for "income", which may mean "earned income" from working. I have been reporting my interest from the Philippines but I never looked into the detail of the rules. My CPA seems to think I have to report it.
