Hi, I am an Australian-born and bred (of filipino descent) individual who is well-travelled but has never lived overseas before and is very interested in residing in the Philippines.

I am a 28 yr old with a background in business who is seeking the most ideal place to start up a restaurant and at the same time looking for relatively cheap and safe place to reside as most of my money will be going towards the business rather than a great accommodation. Any suggestions?

Angeles City, Pampanga.

Olongapo City, Zambales.

Both places frequented by foreigners with the increased American presence sure to have an effect on both.

Cheap accom, basic, maybe one room can be found anywhere, perhaps with the exception of Cebu or Metro Manila. Manila you could find cheap accom but it might be at squatter level or just above. And business premises would be very expensive in MM or Cebu.

IMHO, if I was starting up an upscale type restaurant I would located it inside are very close to an upscale Subdivision or in an upscale mall. If I was opening up just an eatery, whelp, a hot plate, 2 fruit boxes with a board on top and a chair anywhere along any road will do:hystery:.

If you did not get derivative Pilipino citizenship from your parent, please, please search and read some of the many topics on the board about foreigners owning a business here.

Welcome to the board and good luck:thumbsup:

Thanks heaps! That might help actually as my uncle lives in Olongapo City. I’ve heard of Vigan City, you live there right now? That city would draw in a lot of tourists wouldn’t it?

Welcome to the forum.  I think your information is a bit sketchy, as another member alluded to, what type of restaurant are you looking at starting?  You need to do some real market research as what you are proposing is a real hard slog - no matter where you decide to set up.

You should do the 'hard yards' and check out what types of restaurants you are thinking of (an uncle living in the city IS NOT a sound basis for starting a restaurant).

Your research should include documented visits to the various types of restaurants (in particular the types similar to your intended choice) at various hours of the day.  How many customers, pricing, rentals in the area, electric costs etc, what is the mean pricing of similar restaurants and after you have the costs - can you make money???

Don;t want to bust your bubble, but do your homework to avoid despair later.

Vigan City draws tourists esp Filipino and other Asian. Japanese, Chinese, Koreans seem to love the place, but due to strict zoning laws you wont find all the usual FF venues within the city. KFC and Pizza Hut have not found a place in Vigan, no space available.

And as Mogo, who posted above, Vigan City is still a one horse town or city if you will. Good for 1-2 days max.

Olongapo is more eclectic and you may find a big selection of restaurants there. But honestly, land for premises is going to be quite expensive. The Philippines is cheap, but when you start looking at commercial property you might get a shock. And there is a lot of competition.

I noticed a couple of what appear to be decent restaurants up for sale at the moment, one in Dumaguete and another in Cebu. Of Course appear is one one thing and we have no idea of what sort of restaurant you have in mind or the amount you are looking at spending. Some might know this place.
