intrepid Posted September 1, 2016 Posted September 1, 2016 This is sort of a spin off of another topic "Why settle where you did". After I answered, I starting thinking how much I miss the province,..at times. Slower, relaxed, more family, and cheaper services and land. But as of yet I have no regrets here in Laguna. Only 30 minutes from Manila with everything you could want or need without all the smog and hassle of the big city. But I was wondering about the other members who have settled in the provinces away from Manila and other larger cities. Do you ever wish or consider moving closer to a larger city where more things and choices available?

I like to live near a city that is big enough to have a mall, an airport and some decent places for dining. With the frequent airfare specials available I can almost always find a flight to a larger city, like Manila, for roughly US$50 to $75 per person, round trip. So the city is not out of reach when I need something I cannot get in a quieter place. Edited September 1, 2016 by Dave Hounddriver

Yes, I wish we lived closer to the city but no, never considered moving closer. My wife already had her small home here. I just enlarged it and renovated it. There are benefits living away from all the congestion. Where we live is somewhere in between a suburb and rural. I'm ok with it.
Popular Post robert k Posted September 2, 2016 Popular Post Posted September 2, 2016 I'm still looking for my sweet spot, between a town of a 30-40k and a city of 300-400k with fair services and on any given day I can decide to go to either, neither or have a head start in not fighting traffic to beach or mountain. I lived outside of Sibulan on Negros 10 km from Robinson's mall Dumaguete and I decided to go see a movie in the afternoon and I walked out my front door at 70 minutes to showtime. I almost didn't make it, the opening credits were rolling. Going the other direction, Bacong to Duma would probably be better but the cost of living of Bacong is going up and the internet choice/ brownouts and water service has not improved much. Some people tell me the stretch of highway Bacong to Dumaguete is dangerous, it looks no worse than any other stretch of highway in the area to me, except for few streetlights. If, and I say "if", a foreigner could buy land, I would buy in Bacong as an investment because I think it's value will at least triple when services reach a decent standard, but I wouldn't live there. This after living there for a month, visiting several times before and after living there. I would as soon live in Dauin as Bacong, closer to nice beaches/marine sanctuary, several resorts and snorkeling/diving (which I don't do but you could) probably no more than 20 minutes drive farther south than Bacong from the mecca of Robinson's mall Dumaguete / Hypermart/ Public Market and another 5 minutes to the Boulevard. The highway that far from Dumaguete has much lighter traffic and so adds little time to the trip. I think everyones tropical sweet spot is out there, it's a matter of finding it. Then it's a matter of affording it. After that the headache of moving, but you can relax for a while.
Popular Post Tukaram (Tim) Posted September 2, 2016 Popular Post Posted September 2, 2016 We are only 20km out of Iloilo but I was happier when we lived in the city. Spent too much money, but was happier. I could walk to just about anything I needed. Under p100 in a taxi would get me anywhere that was too far to walk. But she was bored, and I was spending too much ha ha... Now she is happier and I am getting fatter from sitting on my ass all the time.

In the city money buys happiness for you and in the province it buys happiness for her? Just sayin'.

Tukaram (Tim) Posted September 2, 2016 Posted September 2, 2016 I just have more fun in the city. I could be in the boonies & rich and still be bored. I am a city boy. I do ok out here... but it is pretty boring most of the time. She just wants to be near her family.
