If there is anyone in the group who is near or living on Camiguin

I don't live on Camiguin however we've been there for holidays from Mindanao, for what it's worth Camiguin General Hospital is a small city type hospital (mostly single level), referrals to larger tertiary care hospitals are probably the norm (as long as the patient can afford it of course).

However transfer to Manila would be more expensive than some options like transfer to Cebu (given that flights from the airport only go to Cebu as far as I know).

Which leads me to ask... why Manila?  Why not Cebu?

Anyone care to comment upon relative medical/hospital care costs in Cebu compared to Manila?

(I know CDO is generally cheaper than Manila but I'm not familiar with Cebu).

Thanks for your comments. I am aware of the small size and limited capabilities of Camiguin General Hospital. Manila was chosen because of St Luke's being there and the blood Dr she was referred to. You're right about Cebu. Flights from Camiguin always go through Cebu to get to Manila due to the small airport not being able to accommodate larger planes. Only prop planes can land on Camiguin.

That being said, at Camiguin all they do there every Monday is labs. They check iron, B12, and other pertinent information. If B12 is low they give another week of B12 injections and this has been going on for a very long time now. I would have thought that by now, her body would begin to absorb B12. There are times when her B12 will not be too low but low enough to warrant injections. Iron is almost always low (because of the B12 deficiency) so they either give her a blood transfusion or iron injection. I don't think that for these services it would be any cheaper to fly her to Cebu and back, weekly.

The B12 is the issue financially. It is so expensive week after week after week and no one can seem to direct us to the right place for any financial assistance since Philhealth won't pay for it.

Have you considered a second opinion?

No, we haven't but maybe it's time. What is vague? What detail do you need?

If your partner has been receiving weekly blood tests they come as a print out.  The first thing I'd be asking for is a photo of her latest test results which using the powers of google you can get a good understanding of what they mean.  My previous partner went to one of the so called best doctors in our area for bloods.  She came back with an expensive bag of vitamins and minerals even though her results were all fine.

Someone somewhere is making a lot of money as you probably realise by now B12 injections cost no where near $70 each.  A quick bit of research and within seconds I found online sellers charging just over 1.5k peso for 3x 3ml ampules. Each containing levels of B12 multiple times higher than the average daily requirement of 4.2 migro grams.  These were about 1,000 micro grams.

The photo of the blood tests and receipts for the injections will soon show who is making the money. It's compulsory to get receipts here so don't be put off.

Good luck.

A second opinion from a hospital or specialist Dr. with no connections with the first that would provide you with clear written diagnosis emailed directly to you would be a good first step in establishing the facts for you. If it were my loved one I would be on the next airplane over there to support her and ensure she was getting the best care. And check facts.

Below the (+ Quote Edit Options) drop down tools all members may enter a quote or saying. In my case years ago another member called me out for being unclear and vague. There is truth to that so I entered that saying. Has nothing to do with you at all sorry if it confused you. THe members of this forum do have feelings. If it's true your loved one is very ill we have pity. However as others have stated facts first.
