Then what causes the issue? unemployment, race color?  OR just bad parents? To me it starts somewhere so  it's a matter of finding that point.

Disclaimer: When I say bad parents I do not mean in the past as the subject is more or less how to solve the problem today.

I think parents, especially old out of touch parents like myself, have to do all they can to know and be aware of the latest dangers for their children. No more “leave it to beaver” world. Unfortunately dangers lurk around every corner. As I said before, I don’t know the answer, but I intend to be involved as much as possible.

One problem in the U.S. is both parents, out of necessity, have to work and consequently children have no supervision or direction.

Surely there is time and surely someone can direct their children in the right direction and hopefully they follow that long windy road. No one I think could tell me they can not direct their own children in the right direction.

 We took our then 15 year old daughter and her same age Cousin to the Dumaguete Drug rehabilitation Unit to see the Inmates while we visited another older Cousin that was in Rehab, What they saw was very upsetting BUT it seemed to have worked now that they saw 1st hand what happens to those using Drugs, I really don't think either of them will partake, Cruel? maybe sometimes shock tactics work

No doubt there are parents who do not provide guidance and direction and I’m not sure what to do other than make sure the schools provide as much drug education as possible. But there are good parents who have children that suffer from drug addiction. There are intact families with 2-3 or more children where only 1 becomes drug addicted or vise- versa.

Many years ago there was a program called "Scared Straight" in the USA.  They would take juvenile delinquents into a prison and put several of them into a room that also had a number of hard core criminals serving long sentences.  Most of these kids went into the room thinking they were tough enough to handle anything.  The convicts would trash talked them and told them in graphic detail what happens to young people that go to jail.  Almost every young person who went through this process left the room in tears and shaking with fear.  Some were so scared they would vomit, wet their pants, or even soil themselves.  The program was discontinued because of complaints about how "harshly" the kids were treated.  This despite the fact that guards were always present in the room and physical contact between prisoners and kids was not allowed.

It would appear to me, seeing all the kids staring at dumb phones all day, that many parents use Waze to direct their children in the right direction.  :89:

I remember that program, it was even on t.v. I never knew what happened but I suspected that someone was butt hurt. It’s a shame but like I said before politicians often choose feel good solutions over real solutions. Now would be a great time to re-evaluate such a plan and give it a try.

The problems with drugs are deep and very complex , I include alcohol and cigarettes in the word drugs

I did some research into drugs ,I was heavily involved in voluntary work on behalf of AA in our prison system I have spoken to hundreds of young lads about drug abuse

One of the problems is that most of the population can use addictive substances without becoming addicts,i.e social drinkers, believe it or not you also get social heroin and cocaine users .

There are about 10 percent of the population that has an addictive personality, its when addictive person meets addictive substance that the problems really happen

To add to this confusing mix ,there are substances that are more addictive than others ,the last time i looked at that chart heroin ,cigarettes and crack cocaine were the top three

As a parent i watched my kids closely, i also told them about every drug i had ever taken , i wa sensible enough to stay away from heroin , but i do admit to just about everything thing else ,i told my kids to come and talk to me about it , i was totally honest with them and warned them that Adiction is a genetic illness that gets past down .

Imho , there is no one solution to drugs ,kids will see recreational drug users and think that's what they can do ,but in a similar problem that we have with alcohol , there are about 10 percent of us with that gene , that's when the problems arise
