Hi all... I just wanted to weigh in with my view here. I do not have precise numbers, just comparisons in general. I find that, compared to USA (Seattle) that:

Electricity seems to be much higher than what I was paying in a rural part of the county.

Water is definitely so much cheaper here. The water district charged higher rates based on usage - more used, higher price. I remember paying over $100/month in the summer for water - over 5,000 pesos here.

Chicken and pork are definitely cheaper here, beef is pricier and - so far - mostly of inferior quality - especially steaks and so-called premium cuts. The exception lately is when L bought T-bones from a Lisa Meats that were a pure delight - tender and tasty! But at over P500/kgm.

Tuna and blue marlin are a bargain compared to Seattle's salmon or most other fish - lately P550 at SM but much cheaper at the wet market - where L goes but I do not. I remember tuna or wild caught salmon in Seattle last year at over $20/pound! That's ~ P2,000/kgm! Not always, sometimes cheaper on sale in the right season.

Gasoline seems to be similar in price to USA. Propane is similar.

Tanduay at maybe P100 or so for a fifth? Compare to cheap rum in Seattle for over P750/fifth!

Rent... I am paying P25,000 for a furnished, nice apartment - 90 sq m. This is fairly luxurious compared to most around here. In Seattle the same apartment - with the limited ocean view I have? - would be probably P75,000 or a lot more than that.

I found that car prices seem to be very high for what you get. My 12 year old Mazda SUV was over P300,000 with about 90,000 k on the clock. And, since purchase, I have dropped another P150,000 for repairs to keep it running nicely.

Okay, okay... I could go on and on... But this might give anyone thinking about moving here a bit of an idea of comparative costs here in Davao City...

I was paying 200p a kilo for blue marlin at the fish marker in Siargo ,gives an idea on how much the malls mark their prices up

Yes me too, The Lad across the road from us, just packed in work and got off to Aussie 18 months ago, came back for a short holiday and said he plans to make a life for himself in Australia. I would advise any young person to head for America or Australia.

The lifestyle and rewards are there for those prepared to have a go, I worry for my children trying to bring families up here in the UK.

My son had a look at Australia, hes been juggling with that one , he is in construction management, currently building a 11m gb pounds project , his wife is head of department at kings hospital london ,they earn good money and are both graduates

My granddaughter made her first foray into the housing market yesterday, shes got a 60 year mortgage on this one

That's cheap insurance!  In the US my house insurance ran $1500 per year for a 100k value house and my car insurance was $650 for basic liability.

:wow: Hobb's Either you live in a big house or it's made of wood and sounds like that car is a 5-6 litre engine. Just sell some of the paintings.

Whichever way it is.....hopefully the incomings out match the outgoings.

I think if you compare "headline" items it's not entirely accurate, or even worthwhile.  Surely we have to take overall monthly expenditure here compared to back home?  When I lived in Hong Kong almost everything was cheaper there compared to back in the UK (at least the things I spent money on) BUT housing was so much more expensive there that it blew everything else out of the water.  I suspect this makes the Philippines cheaper than most of out home countries - housing is much cheaper here IMO.

146 council tax per month x 10 months = 1460 per year.

OK need to know. Is a year shorter in the UK than other places or do you get two months free council tax?

Yep, you get 2 months free council tax, not sure if there is a reason why it's done over 10 months but February and March are no charge.

Only really rent that I find a lot cheaper here but still much better to buy in the UK.

Food about the same, meat is cheap but only because we have welfare standards in the UK lol.
Bills about the same.
Eating out, getting a taxi etc is a lot cheaper here but that's a small % of my budget anyway.
