Popular Post Marvin Boggs Posted October 27, 2019 Popular Post Posted October 27, 2019 One of the finer pleasures of the Philippines, in my opinion, is the locally grown Barako coffee. Its not really exported, and only grows here and in certain parts of Malaysia. Since it accounts for only 2% of the world's coffee, most people will have never heard of it. As opposed to Arabica and Robusta coffee plants, Barako is a type of Liberica. I find it to be extremely flavorful and satisfying. We get ours from a local source, which Mama roasts herself and grinds for us. We just run it through the coffee maker, no fancy press or anything. I'm sipping some right now, damn good stuff. 6
Jack D Posted October 27, 2019 Posted October 27, 2019 Strange how Barako coffee is so plentiful and affordable in the Philippines, but it's so hard to find plus it's very expensive outside of the Philippines. Rumor has it that Nestle is behind all of the shortages for exports. It's been said that Nestle wanted to increase their sales of their 3-in-one coffee products, and they found ways to decrease the number of Barako coffee trees in the Philippines. True? IDK, but this is what I've been told.

I usually stick to Folgers every morning but I'll have to try some of this. Looks like there is a Batangas Best brand for sale here locally.

Popular Post JJReyes Posted October 28, 2019 Popular Post Posted October 28, 2019 (edited) Nestle has a contract growers program. They supply the saplings and provide technical assistance. Nestle then buys all the beans the farmer produces. It sounds great except once you are dependent on this arrangement, Nestle starts reducing the purchase price for raw beans. A significant number of farmers are switching from barako to the hybrid variety offered by Nestle. Currently in Leon, Spain after spending nearly 3 months traveling through Spain and Portugal at a leisurely pace(minimum of one week at each location). We return to California tomorrow from Madrid followed by a trip to Singapore starting December 1st. Princess cruise line is offering a 21 days cruise through 6 Asian countries (Philippines is not included) and the prices are very reasonable. Reason is you are on board for Christmas and the return is nearly New Year so the appeal is much less. Thus the lower prices. We decided to take this particular cruise because the ship will change course so passengers can view a total eclipse. Planning to rejoin the forum next year on a regular basis. My wife and I might also schedule a trip to the Philippines next year. Edited October 28, 2019 by JJReyes 8

Not because it's about P200 cheaper, but because it just tastes better to me. My housekeeper/mother in law brews a pot every morning before I even wake up.

Sometimes there is inconsistency with both aroma and taste because Costco relies on several sources for blending the coffee beans, roasting and grinding. The taste is very close to Yuban. I believe that's their main supplier. The coffee is sold under Costco's private label - Kirkland, so it's difficult to pinpoint who is the actual manufacturer(s). If you find barako too strong, try a 50/50 blend with Yuban, Folgers or Kirkland coffee. Edited October 28, 2019 by JJReyes
Marvin Boggs Posted October 28, 2019 Author Posted October 28, 2019 As I understand it, there is a coffee authority, and they periodically offer opportunities for people to become growers. However it is structured, there seem to be a lot of small producers, which I think is preferable when you have companies like Nestle that are the 600 lb gorilla. Limited reading I have done suggests that the liberica / barako plant is somewhat larger than the other coffee varieties, and produces less consistent bean shapes, making it less suited to mass production harvesting. Which is perfect!

I guess I am the coffee snob on the forum... I grind my French or Italian Starbucks faithfully every morning and use the French press... It's truly an addiction... I just love almost burnt coffee... 2
