I do agree - doctors are well trained but not infallible.  So, a second opinion can be worth the effort and expense. I had 8+ years of treatment and during that time saw numerous doctors, so not just a 2nd opinion but probably up to 6 opinions!  And both public sector and private sector.

I got a tooth pulled by a dentist awhile back. He wrote me a prescription for antibiotics. I didn't even buy them. Everything was fine. I think sometimes that the pharmaceutical companies give the docs a kickback for prescribing them. But I'm paranoid, so who knows?

I asked my wife this very question a couple of months back - she said of course not. I still have my doubts.  Regardless, whatever my Doc prescribes I always discuss with the pharmacist alternative generics which CAN be effective and much cheaper.  I say can because they are often weaker but may still do the job.  An example - My Doc prescribed 2 x courses of antibiotics - cost would have been 6,900 php per course.  When I baulked at this, the pharmacist offered a generic at about 40% of the price (only when I visibly baulked mind you).  They worked.

I don't think the generics are weaker. They just cost less because they can sell without using the brand name. I buy all of any meds that I need at the generic places.

I learned quite a bit about doctors here...  Most GPs in a rural setting have the training of a good nurse back in Canada...  Not that I wouldn't listen to the doc, our nurses are just that good...  If you have one of these for your doctor?  Find one who is willing to admit when it's beyond his ability and is willing to refer you to a specialist...  

Another thing I learned..   cuts, open sores, etc?  If you don't have a good topical ointment, you can always use water with a light touch of bleach...  Or, interestingly enough, a water-reduced wash with an organic apple cider vinegar, such as Bragg's...  With the sores on my chest, abdomen and sides from the MRSA, the doc laughed about trying to use the cream...  I would need 5 tubes each time and apply it 3x a day...  She told me about the bleach and ACV wash instead...  I was lazy and just poured ACV straight on and rubbed it around...  Worked great.!

I used Rubbing Alcohol, then Betadine finally Topical antibiotic. Then a Tetanus booster. Seems to be healing.

In most cases this is true, but regulations allow up to 15% variation in so-called fillers between generics and brand-name drugs so not exactly the same.  

Still, at 40% of the price they'll do for me!

Every time I visit a Watsons pharmacy, they will always ask do I want the prescribed or a generic.... with one being 50% lower in price I know which one I always go for......:)

Maybe the clue is in the handle I use ??  Plus Im from Yorkshire... and we all know how tight Yorkies are.......
