The technology is almost there now but regulations will slow things down. Pilots are already doing much less actual flying on commercial planes than they did even 20 years ago and I expect that trend to continue. Guys and girls sitting in bunkers in the Nevada dessert flying some serious technology thousands of miles away with pin point accuracy. I remember even a few years back about prototype fighter planes flying remotely and doing turns at high speeds which would cause a pilot to lose consciousness. Yes, you are right, but passengers want someone there to tell them everything is ok. And maybe fly the plane in emergency conditions. Yes again, but that does take care of the human factor of the passengers. Here is another example. What if there is an emergency involving a lot of snakes? Do you think a computer can handle that?
