Risks

Integrated livestock-fish system generally

has no special health risks significantly

greater than agriculture, but freshwater

ponds may assist the spread of waterborne

diseases.

The following infectious and non-infectious

hazards to human and animal health are as-

sociated with direct (active) and indirect

(passive) involvement with integrated live-

stock-fish production:

Microbial Pathogens

Pathogens can affect human health through

both active and passive contact. It should be

assumed that all water used in aquaculture

is potentially contaminated with pathogens,

whether or not livestock wastes are used.

Similarly, all livestock faecal wastes must be

assumed to contain pathogens. Thus, bacte-

rial contamination, especially by pathogenic

species is a potential hazard in all forms of

aquaculture. Contamination levels in farmed

fish depend on bacterial levels in the pond

environment and the quality of input water.

Proximity to human settlements is also a

risk factor for increased levels of contamina-

tion by several pathogenic bacteria, as well

as faecal indicator organisms.

Parasites

A variety of parasites may be transferred

through livestock waste to fish and then

back to humans. Fish ponds may harbour

the intermediate hosts of parasitic worms,

such as bilharzia, and provide breeding sites

for blood sucking mosquitoes and other bit-

ing flies. Fish farm workers who enter ponds

may thus risk infection from bilharzia and

other waterborne microbial diseases (viral,

leptospiral, bacterial and fungal)

 

Okay okay... maybe I really need to become vegetarian after all. Disgusting fish farms, pigs with ASF, poultry with bird flu, mad cow....

I tried some type of fish that L prepared for us a month or two ago. I will try many things once. But this fish had a taste very much like mud (no... I only ate mud during accidental face plants, not a part of my regular diet). I asked her the source and she said it was farmed in mud bottomed ponds... So I was done after one bite...

Yeah our SM mall is closed too, except for the grocery store inside it.  So when you walk through, everything is locked except for that one store.  I didn't check the Ace hardware in there.

It's okay.... I get your point... But will refrain from commenting further lest L is nearby and glances at this laptop. I really do not want to sleep in the doghouse (yet to be constructed!). (And I think it's ogle, JD, unless you plan to Google them?)

Update - my cheap and cheerful and hitherto infallible powerbank back-up let me down yesterday. Actually, not the powerbank but the 5v to 12v booster cable. We were upgraded to fiber/copper hybrid (typical Globe b/s as an aside - the connection will perform according to the weakest link which is the copper cable - same as before) with a new modem. New modem is 12v 1.5A, old one was 12v 1A - i assume the connector cable is only 1A as the powerbank is 12v 1.5A and all worked perfectly before.

So, will need to look at an alternative. I only need something to power my modem for an hour or so..nothing else. Any suggestions? I'm thinking a basuc UPS off Lazada for 2-3k - anyone any idea if they'd do the job?

A positive though is that I've discovered I can in fact tether my PC to a smartphone and use the phone's data after all - i didn't think the signal was strong enough but it was OK.

We have a UPS at the office but as of yet have not hooked it up to the routers (because I'm OCD and I want that shit hidden in a cabinet, which we must wall-mount).  It is fairly standard as I recall, but I did go through some pain to try to figure out the watts hours needed to run both the Globe and PLDT routers we use.  I think it came to like 26+ hours of use or something like that. 

Edit: wife says it was 4,000 pesos and bought it on Lazada
