Retirement Visas on hold.

I think they will open the SRRV up again. They will raise the age limits and maybe put a percentage limit per country. Raising the age to 45 or 50 would cut back on the Chinese casino group.

"As of Dec. 31, 2019, the PRA recorded a total of 70,520 retirees in the Philippines.

Of which, around 26,969 are Chinese nationals who are also holders of SRRV including principal retirees as well as their spouses and dependents.

On the other hand, of the total active principal retirees, around 40% or 10,813 are Chinese with 54% of them in the 35 to 49 age group.

The Chinese nationals are trailed by Koreans with 13,912 enrolled retirees, followed by India with 5,971,Taiwan with 4,801 and Japan with 3,590.

Meanwhile, there are 3,615 retirees from the United States, 1,836 from Hong Kong, 1,571 from Great Britain, 778 from Germany and 743 from Australia."

It seems at first glance to make sense to restrict the SRRV to 'seniors' (60 and above) but what do I know, I'm just a foreigner :)

I'm surprised at the make up of retirees - I wouldn't have imagined pretty much as many Japanese here as American for example.  The Hong Kong number may be explained by the fact so many OFWs work in Hong Kong and get together with a local and then move here.

Those are PRA numbers for SRRV holders.  Total retirees by home country would be much different.  I would guess a very small % of retirees from the U.S. have used SRRV to retire here.  As we know, many retire on a tourist visa and many others retire with a 13a.

This situation seems very sad to me. It appears that younger Chinese and maybe some others have overwhelmed and abused the system to their own advantage and now sabotaged it for the many "legitimate" retirees of advanced age. I feel very lucky to, for once, having timed it okay to get my visa, even though it was pure luck...

I'm not sure we can blame any particular age group, Chinese or otherwise, for using a system legitimately, Tom.  If the govt. wish to restrict a retirement visa to actual retirees then they should have an age qualifier that does that.

Agreed! And, HK, in my humble opinion, retirees should be at least 50+ to avail of this system.

I was just looking at the statistics and how many of one ethnicity at young age were using the system. It gave me pause...

I'd say 55+ Tom, if it's really going to be availed of by actual retirees and reduce the number of applicants IF that's the goal. 

If the goal is to keep Chinese out then close the system to Chinese applicants.  I'd be interested in seeing how that went!

It will be interesting to see how this goes. I was so very pleased to be able to avail of this system. I hope other like-minded foreigners can also use it. It may not be perfect, but it fills in a lot of gaps for me and made my life here a whole lot easier!
