Coffee lovers and haters, this news is for both kinds of people. First, let’s cut the chase and spill the beans right away. There’s news of a study that has been performed in the US, and the results reveal that coffee might help to reduce the risk of Covid-19.

Shocked? Well, so are we! Who would have thought your favourite cup of joe that’s a saviour for all those long and hectic days can also be the probable solution for Covid-19?

Here’s everything that this study has revealed

This study was led by researchers from Northwestern University and it was published in the journal Nutrients. It suggests that drinking one or more cups of coffee per day is associated with about a 10 per cent decrease in risk of Covid-19, compared to less than one cup daily.

The thing is that coffee consumption has positive effects on inflammatory biomarkers such as CRP, interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumour necrosis factor I (TNF-I). The point to be noted here is that these biomarkers are also linked to Covid-19 severity and mortality. Further, drinking coffee has been associated with lower risk of pneumonia in the elderly population.

Not just coffee, but there are other foods that you can include to reduce the risk of coronavirus. Researchers suggest that including more vegetables and reducing the consumption of processed meat can also help in developing better immunity towards the virus.

Well, this is really great to know that coffee can be your shield against Covid-19. But there are certain contradictions that you need to keep in mind, before you start sipping on that cuppa.

Here are some side-effects of drinking too much coffee

When it comes to food, moderation is the key. That’s why it is important to know how much coffee is too much coffee. Dr Vivek Jha, senior consultant, Internal Medicine, Fortis Hospital Shalimar Bagh, advises that you shouldn’t exceed three to four cups a day.

But what if you overdo it? Here’s what all can happen:

Drinking too much coffee can give you heartburn.

It can also lead to panic.

As coffee is a diuretic, it can make you pee every now and then, which will further lead to dehydration.

Too much coffee can hamper your sleep schedule, which can impact your skin, hair, and your productivity.

Too much coffee can also make it hard for you to conceive.

A study conducted by researchers from the Australian Centre for Precision Health at the University of South Australia found that long-term, heavy coffee consumption – can increase the number of lipids (fats) in your blood to significantly heighten your risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD).

Drinking coffee can also lead to facial twitching.

A cup of coffee right in the morning can make you poop better but too much of it can lead to acid reflux as well.

So yes, you can try including coffee in your day to day life to beat Covid-19 woes, but ensure that you limit its consumption to prevent other health maladies.

I drink 2 16oz cups a day, less than 3 so I'm ok.
