Forum Support Mike J Posted September 12, 2022 Forum Support Posted September 12, 2022 I read quite a bit and have the Amazon Unlimited book plan. Yesterday I ordered a book that was not "Unlimited" so had to pay the purchase price of $5.99. I was surprised to see an additional tax added of 50 cents. So I ask google "why is amazon adding tax if i live in the Philippines". Turns out that <snip>Currently, online sales of goods and services are subject to VAT if conducted or rendered in the Philippines.<end snip>

Amazon has the ability to collect state sales tax (and maybe local tax too?) on purchases but I highly doubt that they would charge Philippines VAT and then credit Philippines BIR. The last time I bought an Amazon digital book was 2021 and I was not charged any tax. 50 / 5.99 = 8.34%. Sounds like a state sales tax. Look at your invoice. It might have the detail of the tax.
