When we stayed at our folks old house down in Talisay proper I wore foam ear plugs. Worked well for me. There was no armour involved, but you're correct, the bedroom has no windows. The bedroom has an ensuite that has a window that gives ventilation and let's daylight flood into the bedroom during the daytime... The walls are 6" hollow block with 1" render on either side and 4" block internal walls with render.

I'm up early up at 5am to walk the dog in the morning anyway to beat the heat. A little later now the days a getting shorter but the roosters aren't starting till a little later as well. We knocked down part of our concrete wall and installed a steel sliding gate to accommodate our car but despite specific instructions the guy that made the gate made it with horizontal bars rather than vertical so it's way to easy to climb. He also put in a metal groove for the gate wheels to go into rather than a metal bar with the wheels overhanging each side so as a result, the groove where the wheels now go needs to be cleaned out regularly. The second issue was probably my fault, as I didn't specify but assumed... Never a great idea here. Our dog is a great watch dog, but not that intimidating if you're familiar with him. He barks whenever someone he doesn't know approaches too close but being a Japanese Spitz (pure white downsized husky looking lad in the medium size range a little smaller than a border collie) he's more not that intimidating. He's fiercely loyal and protective but isn't going to stop someone with determination. The other side it being a somewhat rarer breed here attractive lad we're little worried he may be taken by someone, something not unheard of in PI. Picture of the boy and the gate We're in the market for a more intimidating medium sized guard breed like a English or American Staffy, a Boxer or an Standard American Bully. English Staffy is also on the list but very hard to get here. We have a lot of kids in and out of the place (nieces and nephews) so those 3 are chosen due to the loving nature with family but are fiercely loyal and intimidating looking dogs. Yes we feel safe here given we're surrounded by family but we both love dogs so why not have the extra protection just in case. Excellent video of some great medium sized guard dogs: Used to have a staff back in the UK many moons ago, absolutely hopeless as a guard dog as they're nature is so person friendly...although they do look quite intimidating and have a short coat, and can take as much or as little excercise as you can give them. The gate looks great, very stylish and modern looking, I don't think vertical bars would have made much difference to any intruder to honest. I understand about your comment about the track or groove and agree that it'll need a bit of maintenance to keep it clean, but if it becomes bothersome, you could easily adapt it, but then the rail could become a bit of a trip hazard, no?
Onemore52 Posted October 27, 2022 Posted October 27, 2022 As I have mentioned in other topics we have 3 Belgians, and unbeknown to the locals they are not vicious but very protective of their home, they are terrified of them and people visiting our house won’t come in unless the dogs are in their compound. Funny thing about Belgians, and I guess the same could be said about most breeds is they have this seventh sense if someone is a bad person or not, which was mentioned to me by an Australian breeder, and all 3 dogs have displayed this trait. If anyone is considering getting Belgians be very careful about whether the person is legit, probably not as it is also very easy to get forged papers. I was at the vet one day getting some vitamins for our dogs when this bloke came in with a litter of puppies to be vaccinated, saying they were Belgians which I could tell they weren’t. The gig was up when he said the price was 9k, when I pressed him further he admitted that the puppies were a Belgian Rottweiler cross, if I hadn’t had 3 dogs already I would have grabbed one in a flash.

Interesting, the one I had years ago for pigging was a great guard dog, was very wary of strangers but not aggressive, just let them know they weren't meant to be there; until introduced that is. Great with the kids though, even our youngest at 3 months old (supervised of course) to the point if the neighbours kids and mine started rough housing she'd not be happy at all; there's a reason they're called "nanny dogs". We trained that behaviour out of her though. At the time my 3yo daughter used to drag her around the yard and give me this look "do I have to dad?". We had to stop taking her to watch me play rugby as every time I was tackled or involved in a tackle she'd go nuts, I mean scary nuts. One of the saddest days of my life when she was killed protecting me against a feral pig whilst I was reloading, the entire family was devastated. 37 minutes ago, Colsie said: The gate looks great, very stylish and modern looking, I don't think vertical bars would have made much difference to any intruder to honest. Not really a trip hazard as there's a pedestrian gate in the middle. Being a history buff, I like to call it my "sally port". But yes, it does look good, it's solid and well built. 1

Personally, I would use a split aircon on that but even a window unit would fit if there was a hole (noisier though)

I have aircon in the bedroom, I installed it myself. It's a split system and the compressor is mounted outside wall of the ensuite. The system cost 19k (1.5hp) delivered if my memory is correct. Plus the another 2k for 5m vaccum tubes and electrical cable...I also got a refrigeration guy to come out and vacuum the lines down before releasing the refrigerant. The wall bracket cost 610 pesos but I did get 55 coins back from Mr Shopee Wasn't a difficult job to install as the tubing was ductile and already came with primary insulation... Didn't have to cut the lines and re flare the ends as I simply installed the lines first so I knew where to locate the indoor unit on the wall... Wella If I installed another unit, I would shell out and buy my own vacuum pump as the guys that came out weren't very good and vacuum pumps are readily available... Shopee is your friend Have an old window type aircon outside in the garage. I've just measure the outer box and there's more than 8" from the units indoor face to the start of the exterior ventilation slots...so I'm confident this particular unit would work fine on 8" thick concrete wall without obscuring any of the case ventilation slots. Belgium's are great dogs and I would have chosen a pedigree dog and paid for the privilege. But my asawa has a propensity to see stray puppies and collect them (or steal them). I'm too soft to say no to her no matter how much I fake being angry....that's why we ended up with three dogs...I do enjoy taking the buggers out and she realises that it's not just the cost of feeding them but also the neccecity to exercise them otherwise there would be dog crap all over her garden.. But yes, Begiums and shepards are superb breeds, if not a bit of boisterous and need a commitment by the owner for a regular workout. At four month old, your pup probably already picked up some bad habits and I reckon that's part of being a pup, but it sounds like that you've got your dog sorted out now... I too live in a gated community that doesn't allow noisy dogs. Unfortunately, the dogs here can't read the memos and notices about noise! As for A/C - there should be no issue with thick walls at all. I have both split-type and window type units and block walls of around 10" thickness or more. Sure, it's a messy job to cut the hole for window type in particular but no more than half-days work at most.
