Popular Post stevewool Posted February 20, 2023 Popular Post Posted February 20, 2023 Just wondering what others members do in the daily, weekly or monthly lives now that many are retired and living in another country . Its been nearly 4 years since I retired from paid work and after the honeymoon period of going to places and spending a bit more money then I should have done I’m into some sort of routine now , I do go out most days driving to different places then walking for a few hours and I do like my photography so some days I will go to some wet lands and sit for hours taking pictures, I am very lucky where we live with so many places close by and so far I’m not been bored . So what do you do, 8
GeoffH Posted February 20, 2023 Posted February 20, 2023 2 hours ago, stevewool said: So what do you do, I like going for a ride on the motorbike, not far and not fast but out away from the city. I'll find a small caranderia or a road side corn seller or something to give me an excuse to stop and I'll sit and enjoy the country air or go for a walk around the area. I've got some favourite places within about 50 km of where we live on the edge of CDO, both inland and along the coast road. Sometimes I take some photos but not always. Then I'll turn around and head back towards the city (feeling more rested than I did before the ride). Oh and I read... a lot... I didn't have as much time as I wanted to read when I was working.
gbmmbg Posted February 20, 2023 Posted February 20, 2023 With the new house build going on I spend most of my day reinventing the wheel. When that's done? Who knows, maybe I might work on why it takes 16 days for a letter to go 3.5 kilometers. LOL
Popular Post JJReyes Posted February 20, 2023 Popular Post Posted February 20, 2023 My wife and I travel. It is a nomadic lifestyle but done slowly. Current location is the Philippines, specifically a condominium next to Greenbelt. The original plan was four and a half month that would include visiting tourist destinations like Baguio, Boracay, Cebu, El Nido, etc. Unfortunately, I had severe back pains which an Orthopedic doctor with a Sports Medicine practice diagnosed as bone spurs on my lower vertebrae, possibly from an earlier injury. My wife's leg pain was from a pinch nerve. A physical therapist taught us exercises and both our pains are gone. The destinations will have to wait until our next visit, maybe this coming Christmas season. We have a simple breakfast in our condo and both lunch and dinner at nearby restaurants. In between are walks averaging 2 to 5 miles a day. There is afternoon coffee get together with friends and relatives. I also spend a lot of time on the Internet with my day starting at 4:00 am. Our next cruise is Los Angeles/Hawaiian Islands/Los Angeles lasting 15 days. We don't bother getting off the ship except in Honolulu to visit with our son. The enjoyment is the ship which provides decent accommodations, daily housekeeping, three meals and two snacks, and live evening entertainment. Price is nearly the same as staying in a California hotel/motel since we don't drink, book destination excursions, buy paintings and jewelry, etc. Internet is every few days or waiting until we are at a port to use our cellular phone. This has been our life for eight years after retirement. Once we need assisted living or in-resident caregiver, we will move to the Philippines. 10
Forum Support Popular Post Mike J Posted February 20, 2023 Forum Support Popular Post Posted February 20, 2023 Typically wake up at 5:30 - 6:00 with no alarm. Coffee and browse the web, email, mod here, for one or two hours. Like @GeoffH I also read a lot, 20+ plus books a month at last count via my Kindle reader. Clean/vacuum our small pool. I also do some woodworking building cabinets, tables, etc. Currently building cabinets for the main CR in our house that was remodeled. Go out to dinner maybe twice a week with the wife often trying places that are new or we have not yet tried. I like to ride my scooter to the local Gaisano mall couple times a week to buy a few odds and ends. I almost always enjoy a conversation with any locals who happen to be in the check out line, a great way to make new friends. We have a masseuse who comes to the house once (at least) a week for massage for wife and myself. I used to do yard work, but now I limit myself to mowing the lawn about every 2-3 weeks. When inspiration hits I will draw or do some painting. I would say my life is very relaxing and laid back but not really dull or boring, at least for me. 9
Popular Post BrettGC Posted February 21, 2023 Popular Post Posted February 21, 2023 Daily, much like Mike J I'm up early, woken up by the dog demanding his morning walk so he's my alarm. After the 30ish minute walk it's the daily internet check and coffee. Our perpetual renovation is still going so I check if there's any workers around and if they need anything materials-wise and if they do I go and get them. I also read a lot, I'm a PC gaming nerd as well as a bit of a movie buff so that keeps me busy. I'm developing some ideas for a Youtube channel based around the entertainment and video gaming industry so we'll see where that leads. In the afternoons we'll take the dog for a swim, weather permitting, and I've started actually swimming a fair distance myself while the wife and nieces and nephews play with the dog on the beach. Thanks to a dodgy back and a hernia, it's about the only exercise option open to me for the time being. Tossing up the idea of buying a 2 person sea kayak now I've got the wife up to a competent level of swimming, but a bit worried it might become one of those bits of equipment that sits in the shed and never used after the first couple of weeks. Be nice if we could rent one a couple of times, but that's not going to happen where we are. If we do buy one, might paddle across the way and visit you @Mike J . For those that don't know, Mike and I are actually only separated by only a few kilometres but it's the body of water between Cebu Island and Negros called the Tanon Straight. We do a weekly "find a new restaurant" run and we've actually found some good ones, contradicting my post from a month after we moved to "The Province". We range from San Carlos to Bindoy and there's some hidden gems out there. There's also some less than average as well, but it is what it is. AM (Angry Midget - wife) is heavily involved in the local Catholic diocese so I help out with the bigger events on that front. There's a couple of expats that have moved back to the area post-travel restrictions and I have a few beers with them every couple of weeks. Weekly Zoom fun with a bunch of my ex-military mates every Friday night, it's just beers and taking the piss out of each other in the finest traditions of the military world-wide. We'd been doing it for a couple of years before Zoom became better known with the pandemic, and whilst mainly Aussie based we have mates from the US, UK, NZ, and a couple of ex-military from European countries that we came across in our deployments and courses etc that join in as well. It's fun. I was in a high pressure job prior to retiring and my blood pressure was through the roof... Funnily enough, it's now normal. Life is quiet, but not dull. Retirement is good.
Popular Post RBM Posted February 22, 2023 Popular Post Posted February 22, 2023 Well Steve, always enjoy reading your posts and waiting for your final decision. So far as living the dream or dream the dream I am not sure which is better. My friends say I am living the dream. I have a very attractive partner far younger than myself, she loves cooking, baking, her little hydro garden plus caring the unit. Suits us both as we need to be somewhat frugal as no pension, neither of us are into glamour or glitz's. . We both love nature. Live in a small but nice condo, no maintenance or repairs which means time is my own, after coming from a large 3 bedroom house some 7 years ago condo living is a dream itself, this could change of course depending on neighbours. Life begins between 6---7am depending on how sunny it is. Gym 3 times a week, fortunately a nice gym within walking distance, just paid a years sub, P10,650 so good deal. Spend quite a lot of time walking plus one or 2 long hikes up in the hills per week, no people just nature. Swimming at least once a week, also tennis 1 or 2 times a week. During the wet days and often after lunch enjoy a good book. We do down load movies and watch evenings, never have TV on during day time. Travel locally around Negros and just back from a trip to Panay, strawberry farm, always use the car. No desire to visit NZ as remaining family visit here and doubt could handle the cold no, We try get to another Asian country every few years depending finances. Actually airports and such hold no appeal anymore as quite content as is. Health is at moment excellent. due to a belief ..we are what we eat..... Natural and almost no processed foods at all.
