Personally I couldn't be bothered and the wife has proved time and time again that she's a champion with money and budgeting. So one less thing to worry about to my mind. Yes we discuss the bigger decisions but day to day she runs the show. Pretty much the same as the UK. My dad would get his wages and give my mum 'the housekeeping' money and he would take care of all bills, clothes, holidays etc. In both my 1st and 2nd marriages we did the same. When my 1st marriage ended one concern I had for my 1st wife was how was she going to cope with suddenly having to deal with all aspects of the budget but, not surprisingly, she did. AFAIK, in Japan the wife manages all aspects of the finances and gives the husband pocket money.
Popular Post mountainside Posted March 9, 2023 Popular Post Posted March 9, 2023 Here in the US I manage the budget and pay for everything. My Filipina college graduate has utterly no interest in financial literacy, although some of her family members are competent in financial matters. She knows roughly what our monthly expenses are, and roughly what assets we have on hand. She has several credit and debit cards, a few of which she keeps in her purse for emergencies. No interest in where the money is or how to access the accounts. All that's in an envelope to be opened upon my death or disability. From time to time we buy one another presents -- we both know they're paid for with our commonly-owned money. In the Philippines, she pays for everything in the cash economy. I'd never noticed it until it was posted here, but in the Phils the restaurant bills always seem to come to her. She always pays, sometimes with cash and sometimes with a credit card that I'll pull from my pocket. Her very fine family has never inquired about our finances, and has never asked for contributions other than small ones for funerals/wakes or family reunions, or once for a medical emergency. My wife tells me what is asked for and why, and how much we should contribute. So I log into Xoom and send our contribution, all the while very grateful for my marriage and the family I married into.

Funny story about American securities companies arriving for the first time at the potentially lucrative Japan market. They were inviting salarymen to expensive sales presentations where it is customary to give gifts and provide food while pitching about their investment products. Everyone was polite, but no sales. In the meantime, Nomura Security executives were laughing their heads off because it was the wrong audience. Wives control the family finances including investments. Nomura's sales force consisted of women who held Tupperware like parties with gifts and food for the participants. At the time, Nomura was the world's largest securities company.

No market research is a bad thing in any country; it's day 1 stuff. Bet someone got their butt kicked for missing that one.

Good people with good morals. 3

Who in the West would imagine that the husband turns over his entire salary and she returns to him a small weekly allowance. Husband also has no say in how the children are raised.
