We have all seen them, the secret 4 letter codes on items for sale at auto parts, hardware, etc stores. But what do they actually mean? I had an interesting discussion with one of the get warehouse boys while waiting for a part to be retrieved. He claimed most of the time they are meaningless, that the sales staff guess at what they can sell it to you at.  I usually ask for a discount and they usually lower the price.

Most large retail chains in the United States have secret price coding known to their employees.  $X.99 at Best Buy is used to indicate full price.  $X.96 indicates a price adjustment to equal or beat a competitor.  $X.92 indicates a large discount.  There is a website, Rather-Be-Shopping.com that informs their subscribers whenever the website creators learn what code system is used by a particular retailer.
