Rooster Posted September 14, 2025 Posted September 14, 2025 We have all seen them, the secret 4 letter codes on items for sale at auto parts, hardware, etc stores. But what do they actually mean? I had an interesting discussion with one of the get warehouse boys while waiting for a part to be retrieved. He claimed most of the time they are meaningless, that the sales staff guess at what they can sell it to you at. I usually ask for a discount and they usually lower the price.
JJReyes Posted September 14, 2025 Posted September 14, 2025 Most large retail chains in the United States have secret price coding known to their employees. $X.99 at Best Buy is used to indicate full price. $X.96 indicates a price adjustment to equal or beat a competitor. $X.92 indicates a large discount. There is a website, Rather-Be-Shopping.com that informs their subscribers whenever the website creators learn what code system is used by a particular retailer. 1
