Forum Support Tommy T. Posted October 19 Forum Support Posted October 19 Classes were suspended at my wife's school since Thursday due to needing to check by city engineers after earthquakes... According to her, her school is at the bottom if the list to be checked, citywide... So she has been conducting what they call "blended," classes - i.e. online combined with some in-class personal instructing... Hmmm I remember way back in the day in Chicago that when where were "snow," days... we made them up at the end of the semester in June... Not here, apparently... they likely just have more singing and dancing activities???
fillipino_wannabe Posted October 19 Posted October 19 They've got the whole week off in my City. Not clear if it's because of the earthquakes, flu 'outbreak' or a bit of rain.

They were given a small amount of homework.
OnMyWay Posted October 19 Author Posted October 19 The fu-ing mayor just canceled here! I am so frustrated by this BS! It is completely unjustified. I really believe that these families are trying to keep the population dumb! Good evening to all. Based on the latest heavy rainfall warning, there will be no classes tomorrow Monday (October 20, 2025) in all levels (ALL LEVELS) both public and private for the safety of everyone.
Forum Support scott h Posted October 19 Forum Support Posted October 19 6 hours ago, OnMyWay said: Good evening to all You just have to wonder. Schools across the nation have been closed recently due to earthquakes, rains, floods and now the flu. Are those in charge so risk adverse that they are being driven by social media and do not want a headline under their watch? Flood control scandal......cancel school as soon as a puddle forms. Flu outbreak in a few areas (kids get sick dammit lol) cancel school and disinfect all the buildings. A couple of earthquakes happen, close the schools, inspect the buildings (so if they find a crack are they going to condemn the building? Wait for God knows how long before a new school is built, or it is retrofitted?) Or is it deeper than that? Are the powers that be hyping these relatively small issues to draw attention away from what appears to be a scandal that is reaching out to all levels of government? Geeez, living here is turning me into one of the tin foil hat brigade members. 1
Gator Posted October 19 Posted October 19 Schools in the area get cancelled if there a hint of rain and all this week were cancelled from the earthquakes that are 250km away. Yet intramural sports and cultural dance competition for the entire district (6-7 schools) took place this weekend despite the quakes and despite the very heavy at times rain. I guess dance competitions and sports are more important than education, lol. 1
Forum Support Mike J Posted October 19 Forum Support Posted October 19 Perhaps I am jaded in my opinions but here goes. First off, my sincere apologies to those in the system that are dedicated and want their students to succeed. I think the entire school system got used to f ***ing off during the two years of covid lockdowns. Why go to school for 8 hours a days five days a week when you can sit at home and watch cat videos on your cell phone while the printer is running. School administrators had it even better and they don't teach and they had no staff or buildings to administer. The Philippine school system was in a slow march to the bottom in Asia for years. That slow march to the bottom of education standards has turned into a mad sprint. When did mediocrity become the end goal and a definition of success? My wife and I continue to seek out, mentor, and provide financial assistance to intelligent students who deserve a better future. It often feels like we are shoveling sand against the tide but we do what we can. Three students have graduated with bachelor degrees and have jobs. Two are well on their way to completing college degrees. The wife is currently in discussion with three more youth about assistance for college. In addition we give out hundreds of packets of school supplies each year in grade schools. So not much in the overall picture but even a single candle glows brightly when it is darkness seems to prevail. I feel better now. If it wasn't 6:45 am I would probably enjoy a glass of "whine" with my cheese. 2

L, being a teacher, has worked very hard to be an effective one. She tells me, too, about a number of the newer, younger teachers who seem to be working just to get a paycheck - meager as it is. Her most often complaint is that they are lazy. So, to give you a bit of hope, think about those grains of sand that you are shoveling... Imagine - and hope - that what you do will inspire your small cadre of students to aspire to greater things? And maybe they will absorb your positivity and pass that along, multiply the effects and amplify? L has had many former students and student teachers return to her to thank her for her efforts and to assist her sometimes, when possible... So there is hope... She appears to be one of the most popular teachers at her school, and it's not because she is nice, but because she is tough and demanding... and the smartest around recognize and appreciate that. I will add some Baileys to my coffee now... too early for cheese...

Our private school is using a software product called quipper that makes it even easier to cancel school. 4 assignments in quipper today that will take my kids 30-60 to complete, and that substitutes for a whole day of face to face learning. And the sky is blue.
