OnMyWay Posted December 17, 2025 Posted December 17, 2025 Any Switch nerds out there? OLED or Switch 2? Main purpose is for daughters, at home. According to the guy, at home it can be played on TV or tabletop mode with the small screen. OLED is about half the price of the 2.

There's still a heap of games out there for it and will be for a few years new and there's also a massive second hand market. I wouldn't buy any games second hand here unless I can pick them up myself and see them working. The new one is way overpriced, and so are the games. Internet Super Mario Cart is great fun with a bunch of friends with voice, plugged into a computer monitor, but just as easily plugged into your TV. Just be aware, the Switch Lite Can't be plugged into an external display. There's a heap of games that are cross-platform now as well with Xbox, PS and PC. There's a bunch of modern AAA to older PC games that have been ported to Switch as well.
hk blues Posted December 17, 2025 Posted December 17, 2025 My 13-year old has the Oled version - he's had it 2 or 3 years but doesn't play it all that much - he's more into PC games such as Roblox or Forza. When he does play it he tends to connect it up to his TV rather than the console mode nullifying the Oled benefit to some extent. I agree with Brett - I don't see the value in the Switch 2 other than bragging rights.
OnMyWay Posted December 17, 2025 Author Posted December 17, 2025 Brett, I had a feeling you would have some great info. I know nothing about Switch. I have a 20 year old Wii and I think one game will still play on it. I have an Xbox that I could not get to work since we moved. 1 hour ago, BrettGC said: I have the previous model to the new one, the OLED, I like it. They are specific to the model? How about old Wii games? 56 minutes ago, hk blues said: I agree with Brett - I don't see the value in the Switch 2 other than bragging rights. Thanks! I took a quick look at some side by side spec but I was at the mall. I will see if I can dig up something to share for comments.

OLED games can be played on the Switch 2, but only some Switch 2 games can be played on the OLED (very few I suspect - ask before you buy a Switch 2 game for the OLE, then ask to see it working). No, you can't play Wii games on a switch, it's 2 generations removed - Wii then Wii U, then Switch/Switch OLED. There's no funky software to convert the Wii discs to Switch format. I'm not sure how well it worked, but I know some people did find various emulators and played Wii games on their PCs.

On both units, can you buy extra controllers so that 3 or more players can play at the same time? Are there sports games like the our old Wii tennis, and bowling, where your body movement is detected? I have our old Wii balance board. Of course it will not connect, but do they have something similar for the Switch?

Switch 2's Dominance: The Switch 2 is a powerhouse upgrade, delivering significantly smoother frame rates (120Hz LCD vs. 60Hz OLED), much faster loading, larger storage, and true 4K output when docked, making demanding games playable at higher quality. Performance vs. Screen Tech: It's a trade-off: OLED's beautiful screen vs. the Switch 2's raw power for better performance and next-gen features, even with a standard LCD panel.

It comes down to: If you have money, get the Switch 2, if not, the Switch OLED. The value proposition is a personal thing. It's a bit like my PC build; if I could afford and justify a RTX 5090 GPU at $2,500USD for the GPU alone, with AMD Ryzen 9950X3D processor at $700USD, yes I'd buy them for my PC, but I can't justify it.

Thanks, I'm on the fence, leaning towards the new one.. I also think the 2 is overpriced but hopefully it lasts 10 years+ So round up, if it is 30k peso, 3000 per year, 250 per month, 8.3 per day or .34 pesos per hour! That's dirt cheap! You can easily justify your top of the line PC! I will also be a user, so some of the specs are attractive. I like the 4k output on the TV.
OnMyWay Posted December 18, 2025 Author Posted December 18, 2025 @BrettGC@hk blues Have either of you tried the cheap third party pro controllers they sell online? I'm looking at some that are only 600ish. Nintendo branded ones are very expensive. My normally thrifty wife wants me to buy the expensive one because it has more memory and the kids have been asking for one since we were in Sydney 3-4 years ago. Given that perfect logic, do I have a choice?
