Garbage

my wife just shared this with me a few minutes ago.  Once again, I just shake my head.   This type of ignorant behavior is so rampant, it becomes acceptable.  This particular weekend people went to do something "holy" I guess.  I am so tired of the garbage and ignorance.   Reminds me of a river that is like a 12 minute walk from my wife's parents house (where she grew up).   I am sure at one time the river was absolutely beautiful/pristine.  The entire walk there, the trail on both sides was littered with garbage, and when we got to the river, there was fricken TONS of garbage all over the place.   I actually was thinking about ways to try and clean it up.   To make matters worse (for the river that is).   They still wash their clothes there, and bathe etc.    When their dad was young he used to catch a lot of fish, freshwater shrimp etc...  Of course now mostly all gone.

One of the reasons we now spending 3 months here Vietnam. Sadest part is a few years ago discovered some lovely nature hiking trails close tour place, which gave me 4 hours pleasant hiking. Slowly these beautiful hikes are being  littered with garbage, it's quite heart breaking.

Not perfect here but 100% better, completed 5 hour hike in a pine tree forest, zero garbage, generally our life is far more enjoyable an certainly much  cheaper with considerably better quality especially veges and fruit.

We live in a small barangay in Bacong. Zamboanga del Norte, Mindanao. The leadership is quite progressive. We have weekly pickup of garbage. You just put your rice bags full of garbage by the gate. There are also collection points around the barangay for those who live off the main road. This one is just down the road from our house.

One of the most irritating aspects of living in this country. I don't want to listen to excuses, as there can be none.

I won't be holding my breath waiting for a change.

Lucky you!!!   I've yet to visit a place like that here.   I've been to Palawan (Puerto Princesa and El Nido), bicol, boracay, baguio, cebu, davao, all over luzon.   :) I guess I need to get out more.    PS, I really liked Bicol from Naga City to Donsol.       But unfortunately, the overwhelming disappointment has been garbage

We have mostly regular garbage pick-up weekly here outside of Davao proper. The exceptions are when the truck breaks down on a regular basis. People do the same and place their trash in rice sacks along the road and it is picked up.

However, on our small feeder road, there are some pigs who throw their empty snack bags and bits of other rubbish as they drive in or out. This morning there was an old motorcycle tire on the side of the road. But mostly it is fairly clean.

We have regular garbage truck pick ups in our subdivision (a smaller local garbage truck) and the city recently purchased a fleet of very large, modern, bright green garbage trucks with compactors on them for baranguays around CDO.

They're actually so large that on many roads they create a bit of a traffic jam effect but since they've been purchased I'm seeing much less trash by the sides of the road so I guess they're having an effect and I'm ok with waiting until traffic slowly passes them if the streets are cleaner.

Several years ago the wife and I were asked to be speakers in a private school.  The subject was how to protect the environment.   I spoke for 30 minutes about the problems of pollution and litter in the USA and how it was addressed.  I showed before/after pictures of roads, rivers, etc.  The wife spoke for 30 minutes about recycling and composting for leaves, vegetable peelings, etc.   The students broke into small groups and scoured the school grounds using empty rice sacks.  They picked up leaves and left all the garbage and litter.   I left thinking about having wasted 1/2 day that I would never get back.  It is almost like litter is either invisible to Filipinos or more likely an accepted part of the landscape.  :571c66d400c8c_1(103):

They picked up leaves

And then after you left burned them (along with the rice sacks), further contributing to their lack of care when it comes to the environment.
