I have found it can be safe, or it can make me feel ill and get stomach upset. I like the BBQ chicken, BBQ pork, roasted chicken, and lechon baboy. I think the BBQ chicken is my favorite. I have learned to let my wife pick out the meat for me. She visually inspects and sniffs each piece and when she chooses I never have a problem. When I try to choose for myself is when I get stomach upset. I am not sure what she is sniffing the chicken for. I do know she sniffs fresh fish looking for traces of preservatives like formaldehyde. Because the street markets have little or no refrigeration they do sometimes use preservatives like that and they do tend to overcook the food to be sure all the little bacteria are killed.

My wife and I are both Fil/Ams and we do not eat street food from sidewalk vendors, because there's a 50/50 chance anyone can get sick due to the sanitation conditions that these sidewalk vendors or their products may possess! It just takes a little common sense or a 50/50 chance in the casinos, it's your dime and your choice! Good luck to your health! Are you that lucky?

When we buy our Lechon Manok, it is usually from a trusted place like SM or established restaurants. I have bought Chicken Joy numerous times with no problems.

Excellent question O-U-C! There are some cases where I would stay away from: usually male street vendors where they go to the nearest wall to urinate and will serve you without washingtheir hands. You're right about the BBQ mystery meat smelling so good. As Dave mentionedmy favorite is BBQ chicken and needs to be overcooked for obvious reasons. I usually lookfor crowds of people hanging around certain vendors, a possible indication that it's OK for themost part. Of course chasing the mystery meat on the stick with a cold San Magoo does thetrick. As they say: adapt, overcome and improvise...... Respectfully -- Jake

In Taiwan, street food is the best! I love it, especially eating at nightmarkets. Now that I think of it, I might head over to one right away.

I wont eat it,mostly from what I have seen the food is not kept hot enough to keep bacteria away. One day I was walking down the road past the Montebello hotel and there was a young woman with BBQ chicken on a stick, she was not cooking at the time but had what she had cooked covered in plastic wrap sitting in the hot sun and I mean it was hot that day.No Thanks, the only food I will eat that is not at the right temperature is San Miguel but only when there is no choice :)
