Popular Post mogo51 Posted May 15, 2017 Popular Post Posted May 15, 2017 At my age, I just suck it up and take the good with the bad! So far the good well outweighs the bad and there is no sign of it changing. But I do understand the 'common sense' issue, but you know what they say 'it's not very common'! I encounter this often, but realise that east/west will never meet and 'give and take' from both sides is needed.

But the first year or so I often heard: Sir - are you married? Yes Do you need a girlfriend? No, but thank you for asking. I have a similar experience... I got tired of the follow up question and combined it into my first answer. They ask my status and "I tell them I am married - but don't have a girlfriend yet." The Filipinos all laugh and the expats look at me funny. One lady that owns a carinderia said I should meet her sister...if I was single she would have introduced me to her daughter ha ha I am happily married, but I think I would be fine if I were single. Broke, but happy

I'm slowly settling into my new environment and as they say " Every day is a school day." I'm not into the bar girls but realise for some they've pretty much got no other choice. I treat them all with respect and would never look down on them but yesterday I got chatting to one in a restaurant. She'd asked why I'd been here four days and never bar fined. I explained it's not my scene. She then opened up that her foreign boyfriend finished with her a few days ago and she was heart broken. It turned out she was desperate for money to feed her kids and pay bills but was too embarrassed to ask her boyfriend for money. In her mind she was earning her own money and not taking advantage of a foreigner. She thought working the bars and sleeping with customers gave her more pride than borrowing when she knew she couldn't pay back. A thing to maybe take into consideration when we bring our Western values to the Philippines.

You're absolutely right Snowy! I once conducted an official navy training lecture before my young sailors hit the beach for their very first time. During the aftermath of Mt Pinatubo eruption, many families were devastated. Many farmers had no choice but to sell their daughters so they could survive. Many ended up in Olongapo and Angeles City. I was hoping that my boys would have a different view about the poor and the hard life forced upon them. Some ladies were abused from their fathers or uncles and ran away. I personally know of one young Filipina who went to Japan on a professional dance and singing group. She ended up as a "Japayuki", her passport confiscated and was forced to entertain the rich Japanese businessmen. Oh yeah, she was drugged out to numb her senses. Later, it was my very first time actually meeting a member of the Yakuza gang because he was the boyfriend of this Filipina when they visited the Philippines. I commend you for showing respect for these young ladies. Respectfully Jake
RBM Posted May 16, 2017 Posted May 16, 2017 Snowy with respect just had to chuckle regarding your comments about common sense. Best get used to it as rare, as in hens teeth, to meet a partner any different, this is yours, ours ideals of common sense. Imagine what these chicks think of our common sense...
