SOURCE: http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cebu/ltfrb-7-rec...50-minimum-fareCUT the minimum fare to P6.50 for the first five kilometers. That's the recommendation of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) 7.LTFRB 7 Director Romulo Bernardes said he decided to recommend the reduction of the minimum fare to P6.50 from the current P7 as a "win-win" solution for commuters and operators of public utility jeepneys (PUJ).Bernardes said students, senior citizens and workers were clamoring for the cutting of minimum fare to P6 during the public hearing last week. The proposal, he said, was opposed by PUJ drivers and operators.Bernardes said he chose to recommend P6.50 considering that many PUJ units in Metro Cebu and the rest of Region 7 use gasoline as fuel.He said that while diesel is now at P28 a liter, gasoline still costs more than P34 per liter."We have to strike a balance between the positions of the opposing parties," Bernardes said.He said that after receiving their recommendation, the LTFRB en banc headed by Chairman Alberto Suansing will immediately convene to decide on the fare rollback. The petition to cut fares was filed by lawyer Manuel Iway, a former LTFRB official. Iway said the minimum fare was adjusted from P6 to P8 when the prices of diesel and gasoline went up to more than P50 per liter. The P8 minimum fare was rolled back last month when fuel prices went down to P36 per liter for gasoline and P32 per liter for diesel.Bernardes said that with the prices of diesel and gasoline going down even further, it is just right to cut the fares. He said LTFRB 7 is continuously monitoring fuel prices in the region. He said they found diesel to be at P26 per liter in Iloiloand Bacolod but still at P28 to P29 per liter in Cebu."I am surprised why the price of diesel in Cebu is higher than in Iloilo and Bacolod," Bernardes said. Here in Cagayan De Oro the minimium fare is already 6.50 but i don't know the price of fuel since i don't own a vehicle and don't pay much attention .
