‘Cebu Still Has Ample Supply’

ALTHOUGH the geothermal power plants in Leyte have not yet been fully repaired, the entire Cebu will still have ample and stable supply of power, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) assured.

NGCP head of operations Neil Medina told members of the Cebu City Council yesterday that Cebu has a dependable capacity for generators of about 794 megawatts (MW) of power.

Medina said that in actual operations, the dependable capacity as of Tuesday night is 673 MW while the actual demand of power in Cebu is 730 MW, translating to a shortage of 57 MW.

Medina appeared before the City Council to update the body on the current power situation in the region.

Despite the shortage, Medina said Cebu still has enough power supply because of the 200 MW that Visayas got from the Luzon grid in December last year to address the rotational brownouts caused by the damaged Tongonan Geothermal Power Plant and Unified Leyte.

The Cebu-Negros-Panay Grid gets one-third of its 450 MW power consumption from these two plants in Leyte which were heavily affected by super typhoon Yolanda that hit Eastern Visayas in November last year.

“We are lucky we got power from Luzon so the deficiency was covered and augmented by Luzon. Luzon has continuously been giving giving us power that’s why until now, we are not experiencing brownouts. The last brownout we experienced was in Dec. 21,” he said.

Department of Energy (DOE) 7 Dir. Antonio Labios, who also appeared before the council, said that come summer, the demand of power in Cebu is expected to increase by at least 15 to 20 percent.

Because of this, they hope that the power plants in Leyte will already be fully repaired.

“Since mosaka ang demand, we hope maayo na tanang plants. As per information from NGCP, the plants from Leyte will be able to supply 250 mw of power. It will augment what we are getting from Luzon,” said Labios.

Three months after Yolanda, Medina said NGCP is optimistic that within this month, all the plants from Leyte will already be fixed. This, since three out of the seven power lines from the geothermal plants has already been restored
