University Of Santo Tomas Hospital

I searched and found a few threads that vaguely said good things about this university and hospital.  Is it a highly respected university and hospital?

I think I am going to need arthroscopic knee surgery (a repeat for me) sometime in the future and one of the orthopedic docs at Baypointe here in Subic has his main practice at UST.  He comes out to Subic on Fri/Sat.  The doc who did Abby's arthroscopic surgery on her shoulder was very good (at Makati Med) and he also went to Santo Tomas med school.

I'm not sure if they have the equipment here in Subic, but if they don't, it would be good to be able to do most of the visits here and only have to go to Manila once.

This is the doc:

I don't know about knees,

but the hospital has to be good, because it's named after me

Santo Tomas hospital do some more complicated surgeries, which smaller hospitals don't have skill to do, for FREE for poor Pinoys.

E g they made surgery at a baby with hydrocephalus (=put in a shunt inside the head draining to much fluid from the skull, I believe it was all the way down to the bludder.) The family only needed to pay the transport to the hospital.

I phoned Baypointe to confirm that Dr. Braganza was here today, and he was, so I went to see him.  It was great because the Baypointe out patient department was deserted and there were none of the usual crowds.

Nice guy.  Young.  Seems knowledgeable.  He does triathlon support here in Subic and is going to train for his first at the end of the year.

He thinks I have pinched miniscus and it will go away.  ( I had arthroscopic surgery for torn miniscus on the same knee in 1995.)  If it doesn't get better I will see him again in two weeks and maybe schedule an x-ray or MRI.  He gave me a prescription for a anti-inflammatory for 5 days.  It seems to work as the pain is almost gone now.  He said to stop the tennis for now, ride the bike, and lose some weight.  I have to get serious about the weight because it is really hard on my knees.

His wife is a special needs kids pediatrician and she is the main reason he is in Subic on Friday / Saturday.  She has a lot of patients here but he said he does not see many patients here, which is good for me if I go back.

His fee was p500, paid to the out patient department.

Gotta love these "expensive" specialists! I just might wait and let this doc look at my knees too!

We pay a range.  P500 was a first.  We usually pay p300 or p400, depending on the doc.

300 to 500 pesos, not that much when you can pay $50 - $100 USD per visit in the states.

Just an idea about the quality. If you go the the Tri-Care web site, you can see if a hospital or doctor is certified by  Tri-care which is the U.S. Military health care system. I have to assume that if an institution is not very good etc. the U.S. government wouldn't let them treat their veteran's. I don't have any personal experience with the hospital, just an idea.

Yes, that might give you an indication but I think the Tricare certification might have more to do with billing?????  They had a big scandal a few years back.  My sister has years of experience in medical insurance billing, including Tricare,  and I had asked her about the Tricare certification when I was choosing my GP here (he is Tricare certified).  She thought it had more to do with billing too, but we are both speculating.

You could very well be right, just another tool for the tool belt
