8 yrs ago when I first started coming to the PH. I stayed with my then gf and her mother just inside the gate to the Navotas Fish Port. It was 3 days before my gf's mother let me out of the "house". She was fraid I would not make it back in one piece.   I spent 5 weeks there and before  I left I felt comfortable walking around in the day and had met a few people. Those 5 weeks taught more about the Philippines than I would of ever learned where I now stay in Makati. Night was somewhat different but me and gf did go out a few times after dark. Most natives stay home after dark in this neighborhood. Rent is very cheap tho. The gf's mother was paying 2500 a month (piso) for a two story place. She ran a pool table t,v, and small gambling table, sold a few beer and cokes. I built 2 small rooms for her to rent out.. in Makati where I stay now the norm rent is 24000 piso and up for a firnished one bedroom in a nice neighborhood. They aresome available for around 11000 peso but much older buildings in out of the way places.

I got lucky where I'm renting. P7k per month 2 bdrm 1 ba. Got it more than 8 years ago and the landlady has never raised the rent. LARGE gated yard for my dogs and a huge carport covers most the backyard. I put a Bahay Kubo in the back with a bedroom in it years ago for the sister in law. It's a very old house in an old subdivision but we love it so far. The best part is that everyone is friendly and it's normally pretty noise free at night.

Drove through Tondo ONCE. Made a wrong turn trying to go through Manila on my way to Angeles City from Cavite. This was early in the morning. Wheel loaders were picking up all the vegetable trash from the street from the vendors. Took about 2 hours to get out of there. Glad I had heavily tinted windows.:bonk:

A co worker told me once a long time ago. He and his son were coming from a LAKER game at the Forum. They pulled into a small convenient store to buy some refreshments for the drive home. He quickly realized that they were the only whites around. The owner of the place told them to get back on the freeway and GTF outta south central as fast as you can. They did not realize where they were.

I used to go to Laker games, concerts and a few Kings games 40 years ago.  At the time, that area around the Forum was fairly safe to the west but if you got turned around and went east after the event, that was a bad area for sure.  However, at the time, the Sports Arena area near downtown L.A. was the worst area.  Many car breakins, etc.  Now, I think that area is much nicer as they really spruced it up when Staples Center replaced the Sports Area.  All the BB teams play there now.  I looked at the Forum FB page and I think 90% of the events are concerts now with a bit of boxing / mma.

Now, back to your original programming.
