Getting politics out of the healthcare profession at the local level might help improve healthcare for everyone.

More than 80,000 barangay health workers (BHWs) lost their jobs following the recent barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections, according to a party list representing barangay-level healthcare workers.

In Maki Pulido’s “24 Oras” report on Monday, the BHW Association Inc. said winning candidates in some barangays did not re-appoint BHWs due to politics, which led to employees losing their allowance or honorarium.

(It becomes personal. Some barangay chairpersons were not reinstating us because we are not political allies.)

Mora said the removal of the BHWs violated a joint memorandum circular of the Department of Health (DOH) and the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) which states that their non-reappointment should undergo due process.

He also said the dismissal of BHWs had long been a problem in the country, adding that their skills and training were being wasted.

I can't help but wonder if this just replaces 80K "old friends" with another set of 80K "new friends" who may or may not be qualified.  Nepotism here can really be discouraging.

"old friends"

I have heard through the bamboo grapevine that a lot of these Barangay positions are ghost slots. Put on the payroll, never show up, get a paycheck and kick back half.

Probably similar to when politicians win elections in the UK and employ a new team of advisors with no experience, instead of employing those that have all the necessary contacts through working with previous politicians.

I suspect something similar happens in many countries.  Here is seems to be a little more blatant with kickbacks, etc.
