I don't gamble at all in other places, but while there, I don't mind putting small money down on basketball games I'm part of, or the cockfights. Maybe I'll move up to small poker games. Had a friend who paid for his daily vacation expenses playing poker in Manila while there for a month. Not sure about poker, but I'm confident in basketball and cockfights. I have never gambled while in the Philippines, and I have only been to one cockfight while there and there was a lot of drinking going on, so I would be hesitant to bet against some of the people betting, unless they were family and or close friends. There is a lot of superstition and I could just feel that had I made bets and won a few too many times, that I would not have been very popular. Maybe I am too cautious but I have seen where gambling caused some hard feelings in the US so I would imagine that it could also cause some in the Philippines and maybe even worse. Another thing I read about was a non Filipino winning at a poker game and then getting robbed and killed on the way home, so again maybe I am too cautious but I would have to feel that it is not a great idea to do while in the Philippines unless within a crowd of other foreigners and taking their money and not that of the locals or if playing for very small stakes. Now with all that said, I never win, so I do not play anyway, but I have had my wife play slots and some blackjack in Las Vegas and guided her since it was her first time and she won on both. Beginners luck, I "bet", but I did have a method to the cocks I bet on: go for the skinny, crazy ones, because speed kills in a knife fight. Also, the crazier they are in the showdown, the less likely they are to take a break in the middle of the action, which is usually fatal. The advantage of this is that my winnings end up on a debit card, and i just go to the ATM machine to collect them. The friends who help us out on our lot play the Illegal, "last 2" lotto all the time. It is Soooooo Funny. Rico, as example. he is always smiling, laughing, and so on. "Unless he is choosing his Lotto #s. Then it is a frown, slanted eyes, super concentration, many facial expressions, and the like. Each ticket cost 3 peso. He buys a lot of them, and NEVER wins.I would never gamble directly against others. If i wanted to bet on the cockfights, or something, i would give the money to one of our workers, and have them make the bet for me. One thing they told me was, "When betting on the coks, you need 2 eyes. One to watch the fight, and the other to watch the guy you bet against.......hehehe.We gamble against our family members playing Mojong. The one time I went I was with a guy who was showing me how to call out your bets and how things work. He also hustled me out of two of my winnings I suspect. But there were always 10~15 guys or more betting on a fight, so I didn't see it as a personal thing. I'll have to be aware of that a little better next time.
