http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/lifestyle/12/31...ature-tops-list RP's strong contender in New7Wonders tops list of nomineesabs-cbnNEWS.com | 12/31/2008 3:53 PM The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park in Palawan province has remained No.1 on the list of nominees worldwide that are vying to be included on the New7Wonders of Nature as the end of the first stage of voting approaches.For James Mendoza, park superintendent of the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River, the Palawan treasure is considered to be the longest navigational underground river in the world.Mendoza said it is time for the world to recognize its beauty."We appeal na tulungan niyo ang underground river na botohin para sa nominee ng Philippines para sa New 7 Wonders of Nature," Mendoza said.The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River is the country's current leading national nominee, according to the New7Wonders of Nature Web site.Other Philippine nominees are Bohol's Chocolate Hills, Tubbataha Reef, Legazpi City's Mayon Volcano, Pangasinan's Hundred Islands National Park, Mount Pinatubo and Taal Volcano in Batangas.Two more in top 7As of December 30, Tubbataha is on the No.3 spot; Chocolate Hills, No. 5; Mayon Volcano, No. 12; Hundred Islands, No. 22; Mount Pinatubo, No. 23; and Taal Volcano, No. 86.The rankings will change depending on the online votes. The first stage of voting will end on December 31.Between January 1 and January 7, 2009, organizers said online voting will be on hold as the results of the national qualifications are calculated and verified.On January 7, 2009, the leading national nominees will be announced on the Web site and voting will resume for all multinational nominees and the remaining national nominees, added the organizers.Only one national nominee per country, the highest ranked, will be allowed to proceed to the next stage of the selection process.Awarding ceremonies are set to be held in Lisbon, Portugal in 2010.
