So much for the idea that we are all very rich. It is beginning to resemble the Philippines when it comes to people willing to take any job, just to have a job. Young and old, well educated and uneducated, they're all coming here for the same thing: a job at the new area Walmart, which has set up a hiring center inside the hall; and most of them don't care how many hours the store can give them, what they'll have to do, or even how much they'll be paid. They just want a job.First requirement: Humility."I'll take anything," many say. In less than two weeks, managers have fielded well over 1,000 applications for just 300 jobs.

Yup, for the last two year I'm in the same boat and mine is sinking fast. Thank god that I have a life vest (my military pension) but it's not enough to support a family of five. I have been studying other retirement locations (Panama, Costa Rica and others) but I guess my home country of the Philippines is my only choice in spite of rising cost, peace and order situation and unhealthy environment. A few days ago, I received a letter from FAA (the only response received out of many resumes sent out) for possible offer as a radar technician at San Diego, CA airport. It's a long shot because I'm beginning to suspect age discrimination. Yeah, I applied at WalMart, Home Depot, Lowe's for humpin' inventory out back on graveyard shift but no joy. Hey Jake, I understand. The Philippines may not be perfect, but no place is. At least I have been able to keep some money in the bank here. That is something that wasn't happening in the US Be glad to hook up with you next time you're over this direction.

Appreciate the invite RetiredNavyGuy -- you may be a "bubble head" (submarine force) and I came from escort surface ships but I'm sure we could spend the whole night swappin' sea stories. Yeah,I agree with ya -- being able to save at least 30% of my income (pension plus SS) is a luxury that Inever had before. Getting back to basic lifestyle is the only way to go, especially in PI. Respectfully -- Jake

At the risk of getting off-thread for a moment, I don't know where you got the idea I was a bubblehead. Spent all my time on either Amphibs and/or DE's

When I retired in 1997 at age 49, I only got 42% of my annual earning which only came out to $1,400 for my monthly retirement pension! When we arrived in the Philippines in 1998, the exchange rate was around P40 - P42 (from Ed Villas's research) to the dollar which wasn’t bad back then, because my pension at that time was enough to live on here in the Philippines and still left me with extra in my pocket each month which I was never able to do when we were still in the U.S. working! Luckily we didn’t stay in the U.S. for too long after I retired, it was the best decision we ever made, “getting out of Dodge“! So, 12 years later, I’m now collecting all of my other U.S. Government pensions which tripled my income to date! We’re now “Happy Campers”! They can now tear up my Walmart job application, we are surviving the global recession quite nicely here in the Philippines!

Boy, I could write an editorial that would fill a full page but I will try to condense my anger. First of all, all these economic, marketing and political "experts" need to get back to basiceconomics 101. I believe all high school and college classes should incorporate one morevital factor that drives today's national economy. And that is greed and corruption. I askyou -- is there a business formula that compensates for this? Today's global economy is dependent upon Forex exchange (for international trade using different currency), which affects daily currency ratios. Additionally the wall streets of the world are dealing in real time transaction -- one small burp in London can have devastatingeffects in other countries in a matter of a few milliseconds. How does main street small shopowners or a lowly Walmart employee defend themselves against corporate CEO's sleeping with politicians and wall street execs? A case in point is the Enron meltdown that left ZERO 401K for tens of thousands employees. The major banks are cooking their books and the $500 suits(lawyers) are cashing in representing all the turds in the cesspool. I believe C-E-O is the new 3 letter word that would quickly hand you your pink slip by outsourcing your job to China. Allin the name of buyouts, mergers and cost reduction. I was one of them, working for nearly 5years at Ericcson CDMA Telecommunications in San Diego, CA. Pinked slip and still no work -- Jake Edited by Jake
