I am Filipino but have lived all my life in the states . Its been a month since I took a year long sabbatical from my work and am doing a bit of soul searching and travelling.. I wanted to connect to my roots and learn more about my homeland, people and also the language ( My Dad is British and we never spoke Tagalog at home).

My application to an NGO got accepted and if things go as planned I'll be teaching English in Cebu by Mid Feb 2015 . I am excited about this opportunity and a bit apprehensive since I don't know anybody there and vaguely remember my last visit to Manila when I attended my Grandmother's funeral .. I guess I was in high school at that point of time ...

Now as I pack my bags and get ready I have few questions which have been troubling me... I suffer from severe Asthma and wheezing problem and use an air purifier and Nebuliser all the time . My GP recommended an Allergy specialist in Manila but since I'll be residing in Cebu I was wondering if anybody can give me some idea regarding healthcare there and reference of a good Allergy specialist.

Also whether room air purifiers like these http://go-clair.com/are easily available or I'll have to carry my air purifiers along with my meds and nebuliser. I don't want to sound over cautious but since I heard that the pollution level in Philippines is very high I am a bit concerned don't want my health to stop me from doing anything ...

I would bring anything you are currently using with you, I would not depend on finding it here - you may, you may not. Here's a couple of old threads that may help you make a decision. Good luck.

You may also want to pay extra special care to where you live in Cebu.  Along just about any major street or highway will be quite polluted from exhaust gases.  Take a look at where your NGO is located and try to find something that will work for you from there.

Just a heads up, air purifiers are quite overpriced and their technology is simple. By buying a (branded) HEPA-filter and attaching it to a regular fan you can easily establish a very solid and inexpensive air purifier for your needs. Of course this won't help you on the streets but just a heads-up. Look at these guys for your reference:

I suppouse whole Metro Cebu "valley" is more or less poluted.

(When I were kid and went with car towards Stockholm, I could feel by the smell when we reached the suburb, and Stocckholm is much cleaner than most biger cities, because the public transportantion is big, so many people living there NEVER use cars...)

> Sunrice:   So I suggest you settle enough OUTSIDE Metro Cebu (at the side where he reach his work best).

Isn't humid air good for your astma?   Perjaos that can be a factor too when you decide where to settle.  Jungle have extra high humidity   :)     And mountain air is suppoused to be good for some breeding problems, I don't know if that goes for astma too.

If you know what triggers your asthma, try to avoid it.  I know for me, I'm allergic (highly allergic) to the dust mite, which, contrary to popular belief, thrives in more humid rather than dry climates.  It tends to be my trigger.

As for the specialist, you could contact the doctor in Manila and I'm sure he/she would have a recommendation for you in Cebu.

Great advice, everyone.  Wife just recently got diagnosed with asthma and I'm a long-time allergy sufferer.  Generic loratadine (sp?) does the trick for me.. Wife has bigger issues now and is medicated but we really have little faith in the medical community here, from experience.   Doctors are recommending we move to a seaside community.  There goes my $1000 budget.....

Not necesaringly (or how to write it   :)     If you just look far away enough from Cebu proper, you can find (rather) cheap ones.  Even INSIDE Metro Cebu there are some rather cheap e g in south part of Minglanilla (=most south part of Metro Cebu). A while ago they offered a NICE HOUSE for rent there for only 7000-8000 pesos per month. Very close to the ocean with own small veranda facing the sea. (Handled by the most south resort in Minglanilla, I have forgot the name.)

Will you be working and living in Cebu City or out in the countryside? Cebu City has high levels of air pollution.

Hmm yes when I checked online I noticed most of the air purifiers are over priced in Philippines  probably because most of them there don't use air purifiers even though the pollution levels are very high . The Clair BF2025 room air purifier I'm using isn't expensive , portable and easy to clean considering I have to carry them wherever I go (use it inside my car as well) ...the reason I was looking for something similar . I have 3 of those but I don't want to include too much stuff in my hand baggage and was looking out for alternatives.

Hmm healthcare is an issue right .. I am slightly apprehensive .. I'll be staying in Cebu city so I think it won't be a problem..
