Is It A Smartphone Or Is It A Pc?

Here you go- just what you need for travelling light but still have access to your regular computer - because it is!  Here is a shot of a new SmartPhone OS that blew away every different OS at the Mobile World Congress (the main European phone/tablet show by the top of the Industry) including iOS, Android and Windows!  And that's not me saying this - try maybe people like C/Net!  They are even talking about it being the one to blow Apples iOS out of the water!  But there's always Android, right?  Who do you think originally developed Android for Google?  Same people who designed this one!  And this one also made the new FireFox and Tizen os look sad.  What's it called?  Ubuntu Touch!

The really nice thing about this set-up   If you get it on a decent phone (say a Nexus) and plug it into a docking station, add a keyboard, mouse and monitor, you now have a PC.  So for those of you who want to travel light and don't mind packing the extras in your bag while travelling, well, what can I say?  Ready to move on?  Disconnect and it's a SmartPhone again!

If you want, you can download a beta now but the full version will be available for release this fall.  Also available for tablets!  And the os is free if you want to install it yourself!  Why?  It's open source and it's Linux!

Yikes Bob...I am liking the future you describe for this...a micro mouse, rollup or soft keyboard and using some kind of screen/monitor/projector would certainly lighten the load for the traveler...

You are in charge of following this and then coming up with a set of hardware to use!

You know Bob, I am not a tech freak and my Nokia 6120 Stupid Phone works for me. But I realized in reading your post that you do enjoy this tech stuff and get excited about these gadgets and their functions... Not my thing, but is is good to have something that gets you excited. Reminds me of the time Jake went to the AVN Adult Entertainment Expo 2013 at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, and Ron Jeremy autographed Jake's ......... yeah right, family forum.  Well anyway you sound as excited about this phone os / pc thing / gadget as Jake was telling anyone who would listen about that autograph......

Good for you. Well I have to go and get my stone and piece of flint as I need to start a fire and cook dinner....... :hystery:  I can't even take a pic with my phone..... So Sad....

Hardware wise it will be just about anything current that can be hooked to a docking station.  I am going to look a little further for base specs but not tonight - it's bedtime...  hehe!  If you want to see a video that shows the basics on the phone, check out http://www.ubuntu.com/devices/phone .  The guy talking is a computer geek and he's the one who started - and still owns - the company.  He's more comfortable with code but hey...  Anyway he starts off talking about the basics on pc and then gets into the phone shortly.  But listen to the first part because he tells how a regular pc, television and phone all meld together.  And if anybody is interested in tablets, it's the same package for the phone but it has 4 times the desk space horizontally.

One thing I didn't know - gamers are going to be really happy soon.  Or maybe even now...

Gamers?  (Ears perking up)

I am not a techie like Our Bob but I enjoy gaming.  Just point me in the direction of low cost hardware that will work in remote areas of Philippines to improve my gaming experience and I am there!

Might be OK for Mario Brothers or something like that but today's games are in the 10gig range and require a lot of memory and power to run them ..... I have to burn sometimes two 8g DD disks just to get one game on them ..... so I doubt that any phone/hand held pc is going to supply that even if they are "Ubuntu Touch" ...... but I'm always glad to hear about new technology even if it is like iPhone or apple  which I never intend to use or buy .....   :1927_: :36_6_3[1]: :hystery: :hystery:

Semi-technical explanation follows for those interested.

The biggest problem for gamers with the phone will be hardware constrictions - in other words if it has enough memory and if the chipset is fast enough for the game - same as on a pc. But, for example, today you can buy a Nexus 4 with the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro chip which should cut it if the memory is boosted - afterall, it is an advanced PC on a chip itself..  Once Samsung works out the bugs in their Exynos 5 Octa processor, then you will be looking at strictly memory as a possible issue - and I don't thing Samsung would let something that simple (as memory) keep them from leading the pack.  That is going to be one powerful little piece of hardware once they can get that 8-core processor going - it's just a matter of power control and manufacturing speed now.  And all the other brands are coming out with their similar models too!  So it won't be the hardware side that is the problem.  And now that Canonical is getting the big game companies to start doing versions for Ubuntu (and thus Linux), you aren't restricted to having to use Windows.  I would say within 2 to 3 years, we will be seeing phones with more processing power than we do in the top PCs today.

Now I gotta admit that it might be a bit hard playing those amazing high tech games like Pong or Donkey Kong on a phone but if you are using the docking station and attach the hardware (including a monitor - like the tv in your hotel room), there is no reason you can't keep on leading the boards in your games.  Just don't expect to beat me - I'll be in the poker or bridge rooms...  hehe!
