Oh I thought the murders of many (loan sharks) Singh:s started 2013, but your list have 9 more. IF these 9 Singh:s were loan sharks too, then a big part of the list were loan sharks. An other big "group" are murdered in Angeles...

When you look at those stats, 31 in Angeles area alone out of 123. There was 27 in Metro Manila, if not for the botched hostage rescue at Quirino Grandstand it would have been significantly lower. When you start looking at the stats for Mindanaoon  south, the majority were "missionaries", priests and military personnel. When you add in the hostages (burnham and sabrero) that leave very few murders in comparison to Angeles and Metro Manila.

I would be curious to see what the typical Angeles murder was.  Probably just found dead in a hotel room after being robbed.  Just a guess.

Actually, I read the paper everyday, if the murder is not a rub out of a village official, they seem to be vigilante killings. Lots of multiple stab wounds and gun shots,,tied up and gagged, sometime with a note of "rapist'  etc

MANILA, Philippines - The bodies of two men, believed to be victims of summary execution, were discovered in separate areas in Malabon City early yesterday morning.

Malabon police Chief Senior Superintendent Severino Abad Jr. said policemen rushed to Barangay Concepcion at around 1:30 a.m. after receiving information that a body was found lying in an alley.

Police identified the victim as Augusto Flores, 34, a tricycle driver. Recovered from him was a plastic sachet containing shabu.

Another body was found under the Lambingan Bridge, also in Barangay Concepcion.

Residents in the area identified the second victim as one alias “Sioning.”

Both victims bore gunshot wounds in the head, police said.

Yes, I suppouse (many) are sex bar related somehow. Two foreigners owning/working in bars were murdered rather recetly, but that was perhaps 2013 so not in the list.

Some attacks have been when OPPONENTS became grumpy when someone paid HIGHER salaries to the OWN staff, by that making the opponent's staff envy grumpy...

So if discount Muslim guerila regions and "grey zone" businesses as bars and loan sharks, then the numbers is much less scary. But still scary when it can be murders for things, which wasn't even  worth a fist hit   :1 (103):  as e g when the popular dive shop owner got murdered by his own guard, just because he didn't want the DRUNK guard to be there... :th_unfair:

Yes, not odd if people take justice in own hands, if/when the police and court system don't punish criminals...

I have tried as best as possible to get the information about each murder, and have found the following information. As to it's accuracy, I can only guess, as there is not a great deal of "official" or accurate and up to date information available in most cases.

This list goes back to 1987 at least, because of the 31 in Angeles;

3 - were "executed" by NPA members in 1987 and were Americans on active service here in Clark, 1 was a Filipino born American serviceman.

3 - were murdered by "crazy" Mark Dizon from Quezon, a 28-year-old computer technician. He is accused of killing nine people – six Filipinos, an American, a Canadian and a Briton – in three different robberies at hotels and homes in Angeles city.

8 - were murdered by a suspected business partner. In all of these cases it was a "Foriegner" who was the suspected assailant, and of these 8, 5 were involved in local "clubs" or hotels.

5 - were from the UK and Northern Ireland

12 - were from the US

2 - were from Canada

1 - was from New Zealand

1 - was from Australia

1 - was from Germany

1 - was from the Netherlands

6 - were from South Korea (including a husband and wife), and it is suspected although not yet proven that the suspects were also from South Korea and possibly business related

2 - were from China, and once again there is evidence of "Chinese" involvement and business related.

1 - was from Malaysia and appears to one of the 16 "Robbery Murder" as it was at an ATM, and personal belongings stolen.

The rest are from Unknown or Uncertain places of origin, other than "Europe" or were "Dual Citizen" and therefore undetermined.

2 - murders were suspected involvement of the wife or live in partner.

16 - of the 31 were a suspected "Robbery Murder" including the 3 by Mark Dizon.

The remaining are listed as "Unknown" with no suspects.

So I think if you take away the NPA executions, the "Foreigner on Foreigner" murders, or the "Club or Business" related murders the numbers appear to be about the same as any other city here in the Philippines, and certainly less than many cities in other countries.

I don't mean to diminish the deaths of anyone, but having lived here for over 3 years I can honestly say I don't feel any less "safe" than in most cities I have lived in, but then I don't have that much to do with the "Bar Scene" here in Angeles, so it does not impact on my life-style.

Many of the "Murder Robbery" at ATM's etc. could have been avoided if the person was not drinking at the time, and had used a modicum of common sense, such as don't wear a lot of "bling", don't flash around the cash, and don't walk around late at night by yourself. These are good rules to live by no matter where you are living or visiting in the world.

Papa Carl, I was talking with a Filipino friend of mine who came from Angeles.  He was saying about how it is probably safer there than many other so-called safe cities - that the probable main reason for murder and robbery was because of some fool wearing too much bling and became a target.  Exactly what you wrote!

I believe the percentage of murderers who were actually arrested, prosecuted and still in prison will be about 1%.  There's no justice unless there's someone there willing to pay for justice.
