Keeping up with the Jones......Jack

The Filipino community here in UK are at this present time, being bombarded with a product.

Fear of losing face they are being drawn into purchasing "kitchen utensils" up to £5000!

I refused to be pushed into this pyramid style selling technic. Needless to say certain fellow countrymen are taking advantage of their fellow OSW's. But this a worldwide situation, called greed, envy, materialism.

While many of us yearn for the simple life, wish old fashioned values were still with us, advertising and media tells us different.

Once people have a taste of the so call Good Life, there is no going back. That is till they realise that happiness is more important than materialism.....JB

Traditional filipino culture is not a complete myth yet. Within the last year my wedding was a traditional community celebration where preparations started 3 days in advance with as many as 50 people working at one time to prepare for the wedding. Doing things like preparing traditional foods, building a shelter, etc. Then during the celebration there were traditional dances and customs practiced. Part of my preparation was learning some of the traditional dances.

That sounds wonderful.

Today and tomorrow are All Saints and All Souls ("Undas") which are pretty traditional occasions.

Hmmmmmmmm  well!

From What I saw last night at the Cities Main Cemetery,  it is getting very Commercial. So may food stalls and novelty lights for sale all over the Grounds.

The sidewalks were so full of vendors that people were treading all over graves to get to where they wanted to be.

At the main gate was a large sign NO VENDORS but like in so many cases, we will do what we want.

Harsh to say maybe but this is another Tradition that seems to be taken over by greed and one Upmanship, Who can put the biggest family food Spread around a grave side? (Spilling over maybe 2/3 other graves)

Against our better judgement, our daughter attended a late night party in the Cemetery with School Friends and Cousins.

I am Not a particularly Religious man but I found all this, a Tad in Bad taste.

My wife tells me it never used to be like this, it was all solemn with prayers and Hymns. Now it is all with video shows and Loud Modern music, Children running amok over all others Graves. Mobile Phones continually Ringing and Teenagers Mainly shouting into them to get heard.

Sorry but this is one Traditional Event I will not be attending again.

Maybe it is just me? but..................................

Roosters, tricycles, and karaoke when they are alive. Very little changes when they pass on. No peace. This is supposed to represent a resting place for the departed(??) I know even their President has asked for a more peaceful respectful means to this holiday.
