Blackouts (not brownouts) are rare occurrences there, but I did it to protect my sensitive electronics - my computer was my money generator so I needed it safe from the surges. We did have brownouts (accurate term for a 10% loss or greater voltage drop which would create havoc for machinery and worse for electronics). Never skipped a beat during brownouts and it lasted about 25 minutes during the few snowstorm drive blackouts we had in Arizona.  As far as power goes, I'm gonna get me one of them super quiet Honda generators ... maybe 5KW or so. A good value and ultra quiet .. and you can't beat them Japanese for their small engines....the best.

 

Yup, generator is a good idea but I am running my 65" TV as a monitor and want to run a floor fan also. My UPS is good for about 10 minutes under that load. Power outages have mostly been in the 10-15 minute range over the last year with some up to an hour and maybe once a month longer. Waiting a few minutes to decide to set up the generator, by the time it was ready for a load the power would be back on. Seems easier to have a 3 hour UPS (automatic and instant on) that will cover me for all but a day or two a year, no maintenance or fuel to mess with as a bonus.
