So was the US, how's that working out

Despite what is published in media, the US is fairly tolerant provided there is no public display of affection.  Kissing or hugging between two men can result in frowns or even more aggressive reaction.  There is the additional element of hostility or resentment which I attribute to religious upbringing.  In the Philippines, you would notice a lot of open teasing if someone in the group was presumed to be gay, in a similar manner as teasing someone who was considered overweight.

I would also explain to international visitors that in the Philippines two grown men holding hands did not imply sexual orientation.  It is an expression of friendship equivalent to a young boy and girl holding hands while walking.  There is less today, whereas two men or women holding hands was fairly common 50 years ago.
