Cebu Crime.

Somewhat lacking in specifics, I got this off another Phils web site and it may be interesting to those who live in Cebu. Today, Saturday, 14 Jan, I was introduced to a visitor who had just come from Cebu. He was American, 65 years old, very fit and quite personable. He was the victim of a scary incident in Cebu. He was sitting at a table having a drink at an outside cafe in Cebu when a lady approached him, started a conversation, sat down and had a drink with him. She was in her early thirties and one thing led to another and he took her to his hotel room. Naturally they had another drink and that is all he remembers. The hotel staff found him unconscious on the floor and revived him. He had fallen after being drugged, cut his arm on glass and hit his head as well ending up with a very nasty black eye. I mention it here because it did not happen in AC but Cebu, a location that I always considered quite safe. Goes to show that one cannot let one’s guard down in any location in the Philippines. He seemed to have taken it quite well and considered it a lesson learned. Oh yes, of course the lady did manage to reward herself with a decent bit of cash

Thanks Bruce, do you have a link to this other web site? Was it an actual news outlet?

Thank you Bruce, that is exactly what I was curious to know. If the story is true (I am not saying its untrue) thats good information. From what I have read this crime is common in Thailand. Bruce as a medical person would you guess if "date-rape" drug we read about could have been used? If so I wonder how common it is in Philippines, don't think I have read about this type of crime in Philippines before.

There are different drugs that can be used with differing effects. Rohynol is currently the TV show darling. But high doses of benadryl and then an older drug used for anti vomiting or motion sickness called scopolamine has also been used. Some used a few years ago in chewing gum in Mexico supposed use was for making porno with white tourist women. Ketamine also is a great drug and is currently being misidentified as a veterinary drug when it was used extensively in Vietnam. A distant cousin of LSD, it may cause a 'bad trip' if given in high doses, often given with valium to prevent such a thing from happening. While I have never tried to buy anything like this in Phils, I do buy antibiotics AND have bought Michael Jackson's drug of choice, Propofol which is used in an IV. I did wonder at the time why the hospital would not stock this but instead send the family out to buy from a local drug store..... So it may very well be possible to buy a 'date rape drug'. HOWEVER, people do DIE if given too much (ask MJ) and if not monitored and supported if a reaction or over dose occurs.NOT something to try at home as you may end up with a murder charge.

I wonder how those drugs work? Hopefully not like the TV type. I wonder because the budget hotel I stay at, near the 'playing' area of Cebu, has an in room safe where I leave my passport, wallet, keys and cellphone when I go out to play. Now if those drugs work like the ones on TV then I would probably mumble the combination of the safe while sedated and all my precautions would be for naught.

Not like on TV, but depends on amount given and your response. Mostly NO MEMORY is the reason used and you can't testify or even remember much if any at all.

So the lesson is either don't get picked up, or take them to a short time hotel? Man what is this world coming to? You can't even trust your prostitutes? Sad....

Sad state of affairs... Just make sure you OPEN your own drinks if possible and do not leave it alone. As long as the bar girl are not in on the deal and brings you a spiked drink, you will be ok. Or make sure you go out with a friend and use a code word if you feel light headed or ill in any way.
