Big Business, Big Brother

I posted about starting to use Duck Duck Go as a search engine, and I realized what probably triggered it was watching a CNBC special "Big Brother, Big Business" last week. Some scary stuff there! I am ok with using technology, to a certain extent, to track down criminals, but the everyday tracking of everything we do and every piece of data is getting out of hand. I watched it on Netflix but you might find it elsewhere for free. Here is one place to try:http://www.freedocumentaries.org/int.php?filmID=245

I read this post and the one you wrote about Duck Duck Go... And I thought I would check it out. Did the old google search and found out that DDG is the standard search engine on a very fast very light-weight browser called Midori.. Hmmm... Let's give them a try! So far I like the browser better than either FireFox or Chrome (or Chromium though it is the same build now as Chrome) and with the DDG there, I don't even have to worry about adding in new SEs on the other browsers. Sorry guys but I think (without looking) that it's Linux only. Best part of the whole thing? (As far as I know so far) No tracking... No logging of any kind of anything I do or see or search for or... Not that I'm going to spend the rest of my life going for illegal porn or anything like that! I don't want my bank and account information tracked, personal info tracked, anything tracked! That's why I rarely use Facebook anymore. Kicked Google + off my machine too! Now if only I could access my gmail and yahoo mail without using their set-up... Hmmm... Thunderbird is back.... Wonder how secure that is? Just maybe...?

Yes, next step is a different browser. I was using Chrome and it is the worst for tracking. IE 9 does not seem as bad but it may be.

This reminds me of a Judge Judy episode. The defendant posted something on her "Private" Facebook account. Judge Judy said... "You want private? Write yourself a note and stick it under your Pillow"Funny to listen to her when she talks about the law and peoples expectation of privacy.

Dude, its Microsoft, tracking is the least of your worries with IE. Get a browser with some kind of security built in, if not, prepare for a world of crap loaded onto your PC.

I think people worry to much about being tracked ...... I mean really who do you think really cares that I am on http://philippines-expats.com/ ....... or that I visited any site that wasn't subversive ...... do you know the number of people surfing the web at any certain time ...... Millions ..... do you think they are gonna stop and find out what all these people are viewing ..... they don't have the energy ... man-power or funding to track every website on the net ..... now if you want to make explosives or join a subversive group or view kiddy porn that yea ..... you better be afraid as they hone in on key words or groups of key words ..... and to be perfectly honest I'm glad they do .....I've said it before and I'll say it again if you ain't doing or done anything wrong you don't have anything to worry about ..... besides they like looking at pretty women (or men) just like you or I (well women anyway) ...... invasion of privacy ..... sure ..... but get used to it ... the US Constitution is just about gone and in the coming years it will just be a memory ...... and that isn't to far into the future ...... to late to stop the snowball now .... it's on a roll and it is gonna flatten everything in it's path ..... IMHO

Mike, you should watch that movie if you have a chance. You will find it interesting. For me it is as much about marketing as privacy. I am so fed up with all the marketing that is pushed in our face every day, especially on the web.

Sorry Mike... Do you know what the latest big target is for Identy Theft? All because somebody is tracking everything you do! Science fiction ain't science fiction anymore... Just ask William Shatner about how he invented the Cell Phone... Come to think about it... Isn't a Smart Phone more like the old TriCorder? I seem to remember an old Star Trek episode where the ship was attacked through the ship's computers and a TriCorder was involved too...

Sorry OnMyWay .... but for some reason it won't load for me ..... I'll try it again later .... I agree on the marketing it is a pain even when they give you an out option it never seems to work ....Bob ..... I'm not sure what the answer is on protecting your privacy ... anytime we make any transactions we run the risk of identity theft ..... you have to shred your mail .... put ungodly passwords on everything (that even you can't remember .. :nudie: ) ..... every time you use a credit or debit card you run a risk ..... all you can do is be as careful as you can and be extremely lucky ..... but I refuse to get to paranoid about identity theft as neither you or I have complete control over it unless we live in a cave somewhere or a deserted island ..... again IMHO ..... :hystery:
