Thanks for the advice, from looking around there doesn't seem to be many places offering per-room high speed internet like I'm seeing in Bangkok, so I was planning on doing that for a backup. Or perhaps it makes more sense to get a SIM card with an unlimited data plan for my phone and tether it, so I have access outside of my apartment for maps, etc.

So you guys are getting LTE coverage? The Smart and Globe sites seem to suggest that LTE is only available in metro Manila. I assumed I'd have to get an HSPA+ plan, but LTE would be great. Maybe they'll have coverage by the time I get there...

Not sure if its exactly the same thing you want but here is Smart's list of High Speed Cell Towers. They are a bit ahead of Globe in that area:

Thailand is light years ahead of the Phils as far as internet is concerned. Even the better class of hotels in the Phils have a crappy internet service simply because they cannot get access to decent speeds from their adsl suppliers.
