after landing at manila and being met by Emma and seeing each other for the first time we set of for our hotel, Emma was 34 years of age so she was allowed to meet me alone i had spoken to her sister and she had known me for the years we was talking so there was a little trust, but she had to call her to say she was safe, anyway all was well and over the next few days i was introduced to her family a little at a time, all was going well and the next few days we was going to borocay just me and Ems, anyway the sister new all this but she said Emma must call her everyday just to make sure she is ok , no problems i said, 2 weeks in borocay was before us and what a beautiful place, i have never been to a place that was just like a holiday brochure, after a few days of calling her sister Ems lost her phone, just a cheap one it was but she lost it, a few days later she realized that she must call her sister and i tried onmy phone but could not get through after a few more days we did manage to get her sister who was at the police station reporting me for kidnapping her sister, well we can laugh now about it but just goes to show you how things can go wrong so quick

Sounds like ignorance on the sister's part to me. How could you kidnap her when she was willingly going with you? Pure ignorance. People like that need to mind their own business.

I totally disagree! I think it was sweet of her to go against their Filipino traditions and let Emma go alone when she really could have been an escort to make sure nothing went wrong. And, a person who would never NOT phone her sister didn't for a couple days... Wouldn't you worry? I would have been on site, baseball bat, tazer, brass knuckles, cannon and wearing my black belt with a fully loaded holster - anything I could find and I wouldn't be waiting for explanations from some guy who has disappeared with my sister!

Put yourself into that mindset and set of rules on how to live life and how would you react?

Bob,

Steve spent a few days with the family first and the sister knew that Emma was freely going to Borocay with Steve so why would she think Steve kidnapped her? If it was against Emma's will to go to Borocay with Steve then why did she go? And, why does one sister think she can tell another sister what to do? Is she that bossy and controlling?

Here's the main point I want to make. Try to see what happened from Steve's point of view. The sister was in the process of having Steve charged with kidnapping. After the charge of kidnapping was filed the Police would arrest Steve in Borocay because the sister would tell the Police his location. Steve would be in jail in Borocay and the Police couldn't just say, it doesn't look like a kidnapping situation to us and drop the charges and release Steve. Since the sister brought the charge of kidnapping only she could have the charge dropped, so how many days would Steve have spent in jail before the sister was convinced Emma wasn't kidnapped and she could get the charge dropped. If Steve was arrested and spent a few days in jail his attitude about what happened would be different and yours would be too if you were Steve.

Besides spending a few days in jail Steve would now have a criminal record in the Philippines for Kidnapping. Even after the charge is dropped his record will still remain on file

I believe I would tell her sister that Emma is 34 years old and able to make her own decisions. And, you can ask her to call you but if she doesn't then its none of your business. Emma can live her own life without you telling her what to do.

I think to put it into perspective one must stop thinking like a kano for a minute. We know that many rumors of bad things happening to Filipinas by bad foreigners and many still believe this to be true so the sister is looking out for her sister. They agreed to call and when this did not happen panic sets in from all the years of hearing things so really the sister was acting on what she thought was right. It makes no difference of the age as its like if one was to venture into the dark jungle and tells friends that we will be back by a certain date, if not I'm sure you would start to worry if no contact could be made.

Lets not turn a nice story into an argument please.

All's good and no argument from me. I really like this post and think it's a great true-to-life story for the OP.

I don't want to argue either. I was just trying to shown a different point of view so people could think what could have happened. Innocent foreigners have gone to jail in the Philippines and I'm sure no one wants to be the next one.
