Repairing The Generator

An old thread about generators can be found here:

http://www.philippines-expats.com/topic/7383-electrical-back-up-generator/

This one is about what to do when the generator breaks down.  Same problem occurs with lawn mowers and weed eaters.  Living in the province, there are only a few people who repair small motors and they only seem to repair the small motors that you bought locally. (You bought it in Manila so you need to fix it in Manila because we don't have the part here.)  The attitude sucks but I have encountered the same attitude in rural Canada so I am used to it.  I thought that this was a poor country so they may want to go the extra mile and order a part so they can get my business but small engines are getting so popular that the rural mechanics have no time or interest in more business.  They still charge a very reasonable price if you can get them to do the work.  If you wonder why I would buy in Manila instead of locally it is because local purchases can easily cost double to 5 times as much as ordering from Manila and having it shipped.

I can go on about the local mechanics but my problem is:  Where can I get the small engine fixed in either Ormoc or Tacloban?  It is a Chinese made generator and I expect parts will be a problem but surely someone in a bigger city can make it work?  Its a very simple motor but beyond my skills (I can change oil or spark plug but that's my limit.)

The other small motored tool I need to get fixed in Ormoc or Tacloban is a Ryobi brush cutter (weed whacker).  Any idea where I might get this repaired?

Dave if its chinese engine you will find most honda parts will fit i have rebuilt many a chinese small engines using honda parts.just work out how much horse power your engine is and look at the honda chart to see what matches. It might help if you had some idea as to why it wont start eg no spark lack of fuel flow filter clogged tight valve clearance is another with chinese engines and is an easy adjustment cheers lyno

Boat / marine parts seller. While you say a generator, that simply means a horizontal shaft small engine which is the same as used in the small fishing boats.

Find the bad part name and internet search for a replacement if you have to. Where ever the small boats get repaired, that is where you need to go.

My problem is not having a clue, mechanically.  The motor sometimes gets no spark, and when that seems to be working it gets no gas.  I did get a local generator 'specialist' to spend 8 hours tearing the switches, ignition, gas controller and spark plug/wires apart and putting it back together expecting it to work.  It didn't.  He said I need 'mechanico'

dave unless its an electric start with a battery the two should not be related the ignition system is fairly simple a coil .a cdi module spark plug and wire plug lead  plus a kill switch so you can turn the engine off cheers lyno

Yes it is.  Electronic ignition and some kind of electronic fuel gizmo where the old fashioned carburetor used to be.  And I watched the guy take it apart and put it back together and I was sure it would start.  But it didn't.  And I need a mechanico who is good at that sort of thing.  And the closest big cities where I may find same are Tacloban or Ormoc  :bonk:

So if anyone knows someone who knows someone?

dave the electronic gismo as you call it is a fuel shut off solenoid it shuts the fuel off when the engine is switched  off  if the solenoid is faulty it will take power away from the ignition system thus giving you an intermitent spark cheers lyno

dave sometimes you can get away with cleaning the solenoid when you fill from jerry cans you can pick up small bits of filings etc which has a tendacy to short out the solenoid good luck  cheers lyno
