Base In The Philippines

I only wonder this, why would US go in to the major expend to create a base here in Philippines? They have so many air-carries and in general naval force which they pay for already anyway. These forces are mobile and can go anywhere in the world for as long as they stay outside 12NM of any country's shoreline and no one can legally tell them anything.

The only need of this mighty force is refueling (which can be done at sea too), provisioning on food supplies, operational provisions (spare parts and consumables) and in case of engaging to a war, ammunition.

In all these needs Philippines welcomes US navy with more than enough capabilities.

so why should they go to the expend of maintaining a base??????

I also wondered about this development from the US military.  If you guys look at the map, the southeastern

coast of China is only within 1500 miles from PI.  If chit hits the fan, the Chinese military can simply reposition

their thousands of missile launchers that is currently pointing at Taiwan and then launch a massive missile

strike to kill a Nimitz class carrier berth at Subic.  Whatever the base functions is being developed (re-supply,

ammo depot, ship repairs or R&R) -- all of it is going to be wiped out.

The scenario is quite different from Vietnam War.  The enemy is much closer now and its partner North Korea,

can play a major diversion by attacking our right flank.  I believe none of the bases or harbors can be protected

100% from cruise and ballistic missiles.  Even Darwin in northern Australia could be hit.  Out of hundreds and

hundreds of missiles, a few will always penetrate our defensive system.

And there goes the neighborhood.....with the Philippines at ground zero.

The sailor (not only in US navy but everywhere) is not expected to go out to the bars get drunk and screw a dozen of women. Simply it is not happening, so many rules and regulations to follow that is totally out of line and you risk your entire career doing so.

I was going to comment on this too.  Here in Subic Freeport we see the sailors walking around and at the mall.  I have seen them at SM too, which is just across the bridge in Olongapo, but only a few times.

One of the big changes from Jake's days until now is that there are lots of female sailors!  They walk around with the guys and that would probably put a damper on hitting the girlie bars, even if they were allowed.  I'm sure the guys have to adhere to some politically correct rules regarding sexual harassment, as that has gotten a lot of publicity.  They probably can't even talk about that stuff if a female sailor is around!

Although, some of the Naval girls I saw might enjoy the girls as much as the guys do!   :hystery:

There are a couple of bars in the Freeport, but I am betting those are off limits too.

We did see a group at Ocean Adventure too, and they were standing out because two female sailors were walking around in bikinis, which a Filipina would never do.  They did a dolphin swim and then they were walking around half naked!  OMG!  :hystery:   That reminds me that I need to post about my visit to Ocean Adventure.

The Chinese are not about to launch missiles striking Philippines malls full of Chinese products and US service members. Lets all keep it in perspective. As it is today we have two active wars.

The ancient muslim visa Christan.

And economic warfare.

Chinese are not stupid, killing their base market makes poor business sense.

You can't expect a bunch of young kids to stay at sea all the time and not come ashore to see what the women are like. That would be cruel and unusually punishment.  The US Navy needs a land base so they can make trips to the bars to keep their spirits up or is that drink the spirits up. Well I guess its both.  I'm sure Jake knows what I mean being a sailor himself.

Last year in the news it was reported that China has built a new missile or rocket that is so powerful that China claims only two or three hits on an aircraft carrier will sink it. If this is true then we need to be tracking those missiles by satellite and ready to destroy them at any time.  Our aircraft carriers are too valuable during war time and have too many personnel on them to loose even one.  If China is building up its military arsenal preparing to start a war then its better that the war happens sooner instead of later.

Americano, I am a long timer at sea, 30 years now!!! I have stayed onboard ships for 4-6 months without stepping or seeing land, not to mention woman or drink. I so happen to know quite a few or your service men in the navy. What was happening 20-30 years ago, simply does not happen now. The sailor (not only in US navy but everywhere) is not expected to go out to the bars get drunk and screw a dozen of women. Simply it is not happening, so many rules and regulations to follow that is totally out of line and you risk your entire career doing so. If you have a chance ask the guys at the nuclear submarines, able and doing so from time to time, to stay submerged for 6 months. A former boss and mentor of mine (God bless his soul) was a captain on one of these nuclear submarines. He stayed submerged patrolling under the north pole for 3 months, every two years he had a 6 month submerged period. What do they do? They study and work, that is all about it. No they do not loose their brains, rather they make it sharper.

Make a base so the sailors can go out and entertain their self?????? WHY???? They can just dock or anchor at ANY port and do so if they need...Make a base to keep missiles, not unless it is in central Africa or central Europe or wherever too far away from the sea.

Loosing an aircarrier? IMPOSSIBLE. The way they operate, the defense tactics and systems, the structure of it, makes it simply impossible to receive attack and even more to sink. Every air carrier is accompanied from it's own fleet of support and defense vessels. The power these fleets can unleash is not compared with any base. communications, secret services etc...they do not need a formal base of their own...they never had one!!!!

By the way, how many of you have seen the later years, sailors drunk having fun in any "public services institution" or even bar? Not unless retired ones keep on bragging on their past and achievements with a beer at one hand and a boob on the other :) One day I will be them too!!!!

Joe,

I don't disagree with you except for one point which is in bold above. I have great confidence in the US Navy too but nothing is impossible, including sinking a US Aircraft Carrier.  Wasn't some people saying the Titanic couldn't be sunk?  Not only was it sunk but on its very first voyage.

The sinking of a carrier would be a huge boost to whatever cause claimed responsibility. But for any real threat, the ship also must deal with many individuals who think that they have the plan.

As I see it, most who think about doing such a job have no real idea about how these ships are built. The layperson jihadist in the middle east probably thinks if he can just get close enough for his RPG, that their god will guide the grenade to hit where the 'magazine' is and that will be the end of the ship! :hystery:  Way outdated thinking. But still a threat to some individual sailors.

But a planned and targeted attack on the propellers may not sink the carrier but can disable it for a long time. I have no idea on what information about the structure and layout may be available on the internet and I an not going to look. But I am sure there are many in the middle east who have dome some research... engineering students for example...

With Syria and Obama's private agenda, things will get interesting in the next few years. :th_unfair:

For those who think aircraft carriers can not be sunk should read this and it was updated in 2007 before China developed their new rocket which is designed to sink carriers:

Here's what China can do in the year 2013:

I'm sure 2,000 US marines with all the equipment they need could kill 600 Islamist terrorist in very short order. What is stopping them from killing the terrorists is the question that no one answers.

Cause then the American dollars would dry up....no one wants that to happen!

Saw this boat moored yesterday taking on fuel http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:USNS_Bridge_(T-AOE_10).jpg

On Thursday I saw a C-17 take off from Cubi. I didn't catch what base it was from but can only assume it was some kind of prep for Obama's visit. I also saw a USN Seahawk Helo out and about on Thursday and Friday.

I looked at the site.  I referred to the link to BrahMos Aerospace.  I saw how 'chummy' the Indian weapons manufacturer was getting with Russia.  I am of the opinion that, if Russia and China AND India join forces then the U.S.A. and the rest of the allied world can bend over and kiss their collective asses goodbye.  The only saving grace is that the US could release the M.A.D. missiles and take the bastards down too.  That is assuming that Rus. Chi and Ind actually wanted to start trouble.
