Popular Post Jeff R Posted February 19, 2014 Popular Post Posted February 19, 2014 On March 13 I will step on Philippine soil for the very first time. Florida to New York to Hong Kong to Cebu. It will also be the first time meeting my lovely Filipina, Yearha. We will spend a few days on Mactan then head over to Moalboal for two days. Finally, we arrive in Puerto Princesa to start our new life. To all of you who have "been there done that", please wish me luck. Nobody knows better then you that I am going to need it. Thanks to all of you in this forum for sharing all your knowledge, experiences, advice and opinions. It has been very valuable to me and others. You guys and gals (are there any gals here?) are the best. Soon, I will be able to pass my firsthand experience to others looking to live in the Philippines, in particular, Palawan.
SubicSteve Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 Take it SLOW. VERY SLOW. Not everything is at it seems. Ask here for advice before you sign anything/propose to anyone/buy a business. and NEVER EVER LOAN MONEY TO ME OR ANY EXPAT.
Popular Post frosty (chris) Posted February 19, 2014 Popular Post Posted February 19, 2014 Hi Jeff, as I am only a newbie here, here is what I have learnt, you will have more new friends than you bargained for, so tread very carefully, make sure you choose the one's you want to associate with. I am sure the first few weeks you will be meeting the family and friends usually at a restaurant and when she says the family that could include everyone from aunts uncles, cousins, long lost cousins and even the family dog, so be warned, coz you pick up the tab, ALWAYS. You will see things that break you heart (walk on by) and then something will happen and you will smile the biggest smile ever. Most of the people are so very warm and friendly and will take you into their hearts and homes and treat you as family but as even in your own country, just go slow, there's lot's to learn. The best thing I did learn is when you meet a local just say hello amigo (male) hello amega ( female) you will always get the biggest smile and a welcome in return and as a SubicSteve said never ever lend money to anyone coz the requests will come full and fast and even from other expats( their worse they get nasty).Enjoy your new adventure you are in for a hell of a ride, but as in your own country, just be sensible with your money and your feelings. Good Luck amigo

Alby Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 Jeff R,In whatever you do, and I presume you have a trusted Filipina with you, ask her first! Filipinos know each other and the system much better than us. The tough life in the Philis has taught most people to be 'scavengers' of sort. Ever seen a person saving their drink til tomorrow's lunch for leftover? And no, it's not in can but a foam cup! And the list goes on... You will get hit by requests for this and that (even indirectly), stay away and pretend you don't hear ... unless you want to! Once you start, it will never end! And like every where else, once money leaves your hands, and I don't care how, it's not in your hands any more! Me? Trying Davao next month for a year and solo. Am I brave or what? :)

Call me bubba Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 and NEVER EVER LOAN MONEY TO ME OR ANY EXPAT. I agree you should never loan money to Subic Steve... but you can loan money to me! Hey, have fun and good luck! I just hit my 1 year anniversary here and so far so good :tiphat: in a previous topic, helping the family or family tax. try to read those so you can have a better understanding of how to help her family if you so want. of what i recall some members have had issues or problems helping the "family", as for me, I TRIED to be PROACTIVE to help, that was when i had extra to help, since you will not loan to SUBIC STEVE or TUKA RAM, would you consider a gift to BRUCE"S foundation. at least you can help an expat helping others
