Find something valuable and everyone in sight will say that they lost it.  Kind of like running over a dog.   Get bit and no one owns the dog, it is a stray.  Run over a dog and everyone in the neighborhood owns the dog, very rare and valuable breed, "we loved that dog, best dog ever".

Been there, done that - I did not run over a dog, but did hit and break the leg on a baby goat.   Not a big fan of goat meat but it tasted okay, and was tender but still a bit on the expensive side.
