Yellow alerts raise concern on power supply in Visayas.

BUSINESS leaders in Cebu have expressed concerns over potential power shortages in the Visayas grid following the “yellow alerts” issued in the past few days due to high demand for electricity vis-a-vis low reserves amid the hot dry season.

According to Kelie Ko, president of the Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry, electricity still remains among the highest costs in operating a business.

Power outages result in the loss of productivity, which eventually leads to loss of revenue.

“Our growing economy will need more power in the future. If this is not ready when it is needed, our growth potential will be stifled,” Ko told SunStar Cebu Wednesday, May 10, 2023.

A yellow alert was raised two days ago in the Visayas grid due to low power reserves, Lourdes Arciaga, chief, science research specialist of the Department of Energy Visayas Field Office (DOE-VFO) Energy Resource Development and Utilization Division, said in a press conference Wednesday.

We had a terrible few days last week here in Iloilo (Western Visayas) - our first really bad experience with power outages.  Numerous brownouts/blackouts from Thursday to Saturday.  Has settled down since Monday.

Perhaps its all those electric tricycles and other electric vehicles using up the power?

Funny you should mention that Dave.  In the last couple of months around here a lot of the pedi-trikes are now electric.  Still the same passenger 2 seater setups but now rather than pedal power, they're electric.  It's been amusing to watch them pick up a lot of business from the petrol driven guys as they go nearly as fast in the same traffic.

I'm a little saddened to see the end of an era but at the same time thankful; the human powered guys were a menace as they slowed down traffic but the new versions not so much.

Here in Moalboal we have had three brownouts so far this week.   Late Thursday evening the power went out and I was having a devil of a time sleeping.  At about 3am the outside security lights blinked, there was an explosion, then no power for another hour or so.  I suspect a transformer blew up when they attempted to restore power.

Wow that is fast if they had to replace a transformer.  They must have been Johnny-on-the-spot for that one.

It was loud enough they may have heard it go at the local office.

Speak of the devil, unusual for us in Bacolod, right now no power last 2 hours, no warnings......

How are sales of diesel generators currently?

Those of you with a house are lucky, altbeit the purchase price might take a hefty toll.

Those sxrewed are those in condos who seldom have any working outlet during brownout, or 1 outlet only, (unless you have a high end condo).

My electric bill has dobled every month, last 3 monts. Shouldn't complain though, electric rate for condo in Thailand equal 6 peso per unit ...

You guys in RP are shafted in this regard 😁

And no. No brownout blackout here. Nada  zilc wala. 😉

But in Thailand we suffer with "feels like temperature" (humidity added) similar to 38 degrees C (100 F) - until midnight.

Heat index on Negros Oriental has been 39 c. (heat index= feels like)
