Yes, that is true, although there is software available to minimize these issues. Also a good noise canceling mic is a must.

My wife teaches Chinese students online through a Hong Kong based ESL company and it became a requirement about a year or so ago to have a degree in English to teach Chinese students. I believe it was mandated by the Chinese government.
