House ventilation

Sounds great, I will probably give this solution a try.

How big is your roof area? Do you have only one "spinner" or several? What size is your spinner? Do you have venting grills in the ceilings in all rooms?

I need something that will work even when we are not in the house. Our plans are to stay in the house only part time of the year.

It's this or solar. Downsides with solar could be that since they are more expensive someone might think they need it more than we do and we might find a big hole in our roof when getting back, hahaha.

At least that would solve your ventilation and odour problem.

The upstairs roof is about 125m squared so we went with 4 units which is overkill if you use the 1 unit/150ft squared formula but our roof shape is odd so not really much choice for total coverage.  The spinners were only one size at Citi when we bought them, but a roofing specialist may have other options?  Yes, venting in all rooms including the top of the stairwell.  Just one in each area:  Bedroom, living, office, bathroom and stairwell.  The vents are reasonably small and closeable and similar to this:

Ceiling Vents Closeable – Whirlybird and Roof Ventilation Experts

I'm glad I wasn't the one that had to be up in the ceiling cavity during the heat of the day removing insulation to size to be able to install them.

Investigate other options as well, or get someone in to check the place out.  Having said that, we're very happy with how our solution worked out for us. YMMV.

I think the recommended size of the spinners is calculated for venting the attic only, so it's probably a good idea to have it oversized if wanting to ventilate the rooms as well.

You said they only had one size in Citi hardware, can you give an estimation of the diameter of the "throat" of the ones you have? I have seen everything from 100 mm up to 1000mm advertised.

In our case it's not so much for the heat, since that is not a problem after we installed a radiant barrier. Our main goal is to reduce the bad smell.

Are you saying that regular solar panels won't withstand the heat of the sun?

There are solar panels and there are solar panels. Two days ago I had a helper remove a solar powered cctv camera because I needed to reset it. I should have done it weeks ago but there were always other priorities. Anyway, the solar panel outer layer is peeling off (the unit is two years old) because it is plastic. Regular solar panels that you would install for power on your roof are much more robust, guaranteed often for a number of years and do last a long time.

I'm paranoid about leaks.  Our roof panels are a type that have a decorative wave on them.  How does the twirly seal up on an installation like that?

We have flashing around ours moulded to the corrugation of of the roof.  Due to the shape of the vents themselves, water won't come in through the overlapping fins either.

Yes.  It should also be remembered that they should be cleaned/washed at least bi-annually in most circumstances.   There's a reasonably large solar farm at the sugar refinery just north of Bais in Negros Oriental... I sigh/chuckle at how dirty the panels are every time I drive past it.
