I don't know what you consider "cheap", but I typically stay at the Manor. I like to stay in a central area when I am in Davao. the Manor provides that for me. Manor HotelA. Pichon St., Davao City(082) 221-2511, 221-2514http://www.manorhoteldavao.comDo note, the Manor Hotel does not have an elevator. Well, it didn't the last time I was there anyway, in 2007.

How is the crime vs. (damn) foreigners these days? I had thought about going there a while ago, but everything I see recommends it is safer the farther north you are.

Mindanao is often lumped as a whole and said to be unsafe, when the facts are that most of Mindanao is safe for foreigners and the only area that is very bad is down near and around Zamboanga down to Basilan and Jolo and the Catabato and General Santos area. IMO foreigners would be safe within Mindanao as long as they keep a low profile and use common sense. There are many white foreigners (the ones who stand out the most) who live in many parts of Mindanao including Davao, Zamboanga and many of those areas that are said to be dangerous for foreigners to visit. Mindanao often gets a bad rap and especially from Filipinos from other regions who seem to think that anyone from Mindanao is a Muslim and that is not the fact. The areas that are predominately Muslim are shown in the below map, and that is but a small percentage of the whole of Mindanao. Not all Muslims are out to hurt foreigners, but the bad ones hide among the good ones, so those areas would probably be less safe to visit. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autonomous_Re...Muslim_Mindanao

I stayed at Davao for a week or so a few years back, never had a problem and felt safe all the time. I don't think Davao is any different to Cebu but perhaps a bit cleaner.Maybe the soldiers around the airport we a bit intimidating with their guns which looked to be about 5 foot long, they stopped my taxi and opened my door, just asked where I was from and wished me a good day.I stayed part of the time at the Waterfront hotel there, security guards with M16's or something patrolled the grounds. But out in the streets and malls just like Cebu. :AddEmoticons04230:

I stayed in Davao City several times last year, its been a year since I stayed there so my information is as old as this thread. I stayed in Sampaguita Tourist Inn, very good value for money, close to the Davao Doctors hospital I had a medical condition so I needed to go there often for physio therapy and some blood tests. I cant say enough about how safe I felt there and I did walk around at night by myself. Plenty of food places, Mall, and shops, restaurants and some night spots all in walking distance. The city is spread out so you will need to catch a taxi to some malls and places I paid around 70 pesos from the Inn to Victoria plaza. It cost a little bit more to go Matina across the river and up to Jacks Ridge look out and restaurant. This is the new place they were building on the corner the Inn was so popular you were lucky to get a room I made sure to book each time I went there. I dont know what this new place is like it looks more upmarket than the old Tourist Inn and I dont know if the old building is still operating. http://www.travbuddy.com/Sampaguita-Tourist-Inn-v309733
