OBA Posted March 30, 2012 Author Posted March 30, 2012 Congrats man! I am interested to see how things turn out for you. Where are you planning to live, and why? Already got a girl? Thanks for your kind words. I will be in makati after landing, spend a few days there simply to recover from the flight and refocus. From there, i will seek a monthly rental in the laguna area and use that as my base for a few months while i check out the rest of the country. bohol will be my final destination unless i am lead to another place by divine order. I seek to grow coconuts and to learn the rice growing business, not for profits ( i am done chasing money), but these can provide local jobs and can be shipped to the hungry around the world and locally. I have a business associate there, she is not a girl friend, i havent even met her in person, she will escort me when she can.

bows00 Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 Growing coconuts and rice to provide local jobs and help the hungary? It is so inspiring to hear that. So many ex-retirees should take note of this. You will still have that deep sense of purpose that is so important in all phases of our lives. It must be nice when money is no longer a problem for you. The freedom... wow, thanks for sharing that! softail Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 If you are going to be in Laguna, make sure you take the time to check Tagaytay. It's a beautiful area, high above the smog on the Taal volcano, nice and cool, just might change your plans on where to settle.Doug
jode Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 Just have to say what should be obvious to anyone moving to a differant country. You are a guest here and leave many rights" behind when you leave your home country. Things that you have a right to get pissed about in your own country you have to learn to just smile and tolerate here. Filipinoes are a sensitive and good natured people and try to be a good ambasador of the USA. From your plans sounds like that won't be a concern. It has always seemed to me that their land here is underutilized for agriculture. It seems like they could produce more given the tropical climate, good soil and ample rainfall. Although I am certainly ne expert on that. An energetic ambitious farmer guy from USA is what they need more of here maybe, given the growing ovepopulation, hope you are successfull with your plans. You plan on leaseing land because you can't own in philippines as u know.
JJReyes Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 (edited) Thanks for your kind words. There is undeveloped agricultural land available located about 75 kilometers from Metro Manila and a project proposal that might interest you. Papaya grows everywhere in a tropical climate. The difficulty is today's seeds are hybrid, which means you have to keep buying more from agricultural corporations for new planting every few years. You can't use seeds produced by the hybrid trees. This is how commercial growers control the seed business. On the plus side, the hybrid trees produce fast growing, consistent size fruit, provided you use lots of chemical fertilizer. There is no excuse for malnutrition in the Philippines when you can plant a few seeds in your backyard that will produce excellent fruit on a year round basis. You could get high school students to engage in guerilla warfare. They can scatter seeds whenever they see an abandoned property. Anyone can harvest the fruit. You have an informal community garden until the mean landowner decides to chop down the papaya trees. My inspiration is the old children's story, "Johnny Appleseed."While heirloom papaya seeds are available, I am still looking for one for the Philippines that is pest resistant. The general concept is non-hybrid seed production to be given to school children for propagation. There is non-profit project. However, it may attract funding organization later, if proven successful.I will be in Manila from April 22nd to 29th staying at the Saint Illians Inn in Makati (7461 Santillan St., Pio Del Pilar, Makati City 1230). My plan is to visit the property on April 28th. I have arrange the rental of a SUV for a day trip. Let me know if you are interested.By the way, this project proposal is open to other forum members.
