Popular Post OnMyWay Posted April 1, 2013 Popular Post Posted April 1, 2013 Ahhhh, life is good! We are enjoying our first full day in Subic Bay after our move yesterday! Of course, we are still unpacking, etc., but today was much easier than yesterday. The movers worked out well. We found several on Sulit but ended up using one we spotted on poles around the neighborhood in Laguna. I was a little nervous about this at first but they were good guys and had everything we needed including an extra Mitsubishi Adventurer to haul 4 of us as well. Total cost to move from Laguna to Subic: P15,000 including a 14 ft truck, Mitsubishi Adventure, pickup at two locations in Laguna, all tolls, all fuel, two drivers and one helper. I was a bit dismayed when the movers said they wanted to start at 3 AM! However, they knew what they were doing in order to beat the traffic through Manila. Loading did not take long and I think we were on the road by 0530, and arrived at a bit after 8 AM. Unloading went well too and we sent them on their way with full bellies and a small tip for each. Our new house is nice but it is unfurnished, so we will be hastily furnishing over the coming weeks. Our new landlord generously purchased a new gas stove to replace the older electric stove. The most urgent purchase for us was a refrigerator and we took care of that tonight. Bought a nice LG from Western Appliance after shopping at Abensen and Saver's as well. I had been in Western before and did not spend any time there because their prices seemed sky high, but it seems that their strategy is to list the suggested retail and discount from it. They had the best deal for us today and free delivery tomorrow. I wanted to put off another acquisition until after we moved but the day before our move I gave in to the 8 year old and let her keep a little black kitty that the neighbors had. It is actually a really sweet cat and it rode in the Adventure all the way, snoozing comfortably in our laps with barely a meow. Our new landlord (and next door neighbor) has two dogs, a Dachshund and black Labrador mix. They are both good dogs and the Dachshund has decided I am his new best friend. They both tolerate the kitty fairly well. I will update more as when time allows.

earthdome Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 When searching for movers use the phrase "Lipat Bahay" which translates as "move home". I will be moving in the next 2 weeks if the new apt in Baguio is ready on time and have already found a mover that will do the move from San Fernando, La Union to Baguio for just 3000 pesos. That includes the driver and 2 helpers. I expect I will feed them and give them a nice tip since my current apartment is on the third floor and the new apartment is down a path with 90 steps! Hope my move goes as smoothly as yours.

JJReyes Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 Unloading went well too and we sent them on their way with full bellies and a small tip for each. Did you provide the movers with bento (lunch boxes) or take them to a nearby restaurant? My experience with restaurants is they won't seat at the same table, preferring a separate one and you pay the bill.

Americano Posted April 3, 2013 Posted April 3, 2013 Thanks for the story about your move. The Filipinos I have talked to may not know what you mean if you say you moved. They call it transfer. Even when you move from one chair to another one its called transfer. This could be different according to the area you live in.

No, the girls cooked food the night before and brought it along, so they had a luxury lunch on our front porch!

It was painful to watch the guys "transfer" my new refrigerator into the house yesterday. It is 14.5 cubit feet so it is not a real small one. Our house has a large front landscaped area and the house is probably 20 feet higher than the road. 3 guys lowered it from the truck, then they balanced the boxed frig on the back of one guy and he walked it up the steep driveway and then up two small flights of stairs to the front door, where they unboxed it. After they put it in the front door they were able to roll it the rest of the way. My back was killing me from just watching that guy walk it up the hill on his back!
Dougbert Posted April 3, 2013 Posted April 3, 2013 Haha! I remember when my GF first told me she would transfer and I was very confused for a little while. Was she changing jobs? Moving money around at the bank? Noooooo, she's moving to a new place! I find these little snippets of strange language use very entertaining for some reason. When I was there in November I bought her a small ~5-6cu.ft. fridge. Delivery was 300p and the guy brought it from the truck the same way. This is down on Mactan.
